Elva Alma Smith Netherton, 96, of Candler was called to be with Jesus, her Savior, on Sunday, February 18, 2007 while convalescing from a broken hip at the Oaks of Sweeten Creek. She was a daughter of the late Sam J. and Alma Guy Smith. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Charlie, her sons, Eloties James, of Candler, and Robert Lee, of Morganton; grandson, Michael Wade; great-grandchildren, Levi Slagle and Tessa Bonning; sisters, Margaret Grindstaff and Eulah Henson; brothers, Wade, Blake, S.J., and Lee Roy Smith; and step-mother, Loccie Warren Smith. She was a housewife and mother and her gentle, loving spirit reached out from her home to everyone she met. Her sweet smile and humor touched people of all ages and situations. The glow of her bright light remains in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a member of the Electa Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She was a faithful and active member of Brown’s View United Methodist Church since 1923. She is survived by her daughter, Hilda Alma N. Farmer and husband Tommy; Edgar Wade and wife Ruby; Wilburn Charles and wife Mary, of Candler; daughters-in-law, Martha F. Netherton, of Candler and Billie P. Netherton, of Morganton; brother, Cyrl Ray (Spook) Smith; grandchildren, Mildred (Midgie) Luce, Dr. Loretta Morgan, Danny Netherton, Terry Farmer, Barbara Slagle, Oleta Rigdon, Ricky Netherton, Rebecca Hill, James (Jimmy) Netherton, Gregory Netherton, Donna Norris and Kristi Mull; 22 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. Thursday prior to the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. at Brown’s View United Methodist Church with the Revs. George Davis, H.D. Houck & Dan McCurry officiating. Interment will follow in the church’s cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

    It is a sad loss. Elva was always so kind and so generous. I remember visiting her and Charlie every Halloween as a kid, and visiting Elva with my grandpa (Lee Roy). A true loss for the world, but a gift to Heaven. You have my sympathies.

    I have known Elva my whole life and I can say that it was a true blessing. She was a remarkable women and as a child she was a great role model for me. Come rain or snow she was at Church every Sunday to greet you with a warm smile and a big hug! When I got married a few years ago Elva was sure to be at my wedding which meant the absolute world to me and Scott. She touched my life.
    I love you all and we know that this loss is very difficult; but by our faith in God we all know that Elva is in the most wonderful Place now; she is standing in the light of His amazing grace. When thinking of Elva this scripture comes to mind that Paul said:

    2 Timothy 4;7
    I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

  14. God needed another angel in his vast domain. Elva was a true and loving child of God and she was an inspiration to us. we will miss her dearly.

    Sorry to hear of the home going of our neighbor, Elva. She was such an inspiration to us. When we walked the Loop, she would often greet us with a smile. Her little dog was by her side. May the Lord bless all of you during this time.

  16. My memories on Beaverdam for 18 years was always brightened by seeing Elva & Charlie.Their sense of humor and kindness has left a beautiful memory of my growing up days there. I loved knowing the family and pray that you will remember her as a beacon of light to all of us youngins in Beaverdam.   19. Last summer I stopped in to tell Elva how thru the many years that’s past, I always remembered how sweet and kind she always was to a ‘bunch’ of kids that always needed a place to play baksetball she always met us with a smile.Heaven has another beautiful angel.God bless her family.

  20. Elva is my first cousin. My Daddy was her uncle, brother of Uncle Sam Smith. Mother and Daddy were Frank and Wilcy Smith of Beaverdan Loop at Candler. We live on Ball Gap Rd at Arden. We thought a lot of Elva and Charlie.
