Resided in:
Candler, NC
Ethel Louise Hawkes 81, formerly of Litchfield, MI, passed away Sunday night March 1, 2010, at the Pisgah Manor Nursing Home after a long goodbye.
She grew up on her parent's dairy farm in Litchfield. She was a fiercely independent spirit and this carried her though her entire life.
She so wanted to travel and see the world. In 1980, after she retired from Michigan Bell as a supervisor, she packed her belongings in a U-Haul and moved herself to Asheville, NC, to begin a new life in retirement.
Louise devoted her entire life to helping people and making their days brighter. In her working career, she received numerous awards from every place she worked. Customers would take the time to write real letters to thank her for going beyond what was expected. Her last job was probably her favorite. Louise loved babies and enjoyed her time working in the infant department at JC Penny's.
She was frugal with her money and was at times able to leave lasting gifts. Louise, with her brother, Irving, donated the Methodist Cross and Flames on the Litchfield United Methodist Church in their parent's memory.
She was active in political campaigns for State Representatives in Michigan and North Carolina.
For many years Louise was responsible for operation of the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville's sound system. She later became an active member of the Groce United Methodist Church of Asheville.
She was the daughter of the late Jay and Orinda Lazenby Hawkes and is preceded in death by her brother, Irving Hawkes. She is survived by her niece, Cecelia Evans, and three nephews, James Lee Hawkes, George Hawkes, and Randy Hawkes all of Litchfield, MI, and many special great-nieces and nephews. Louise leaves behind many wonderful friends she made here in Asheville.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday March 10, 2010, at the George White Funeral Home, in Litchfield. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.
Memorials may be Pisgah Manor, 95 Holcombe Cove Rd. Candler, NC 28715.
Louise will be missed by many here at Pisgah Manor. She brought so much joy to our lives. She started coming to activities more and especially loved to watch Lawerence Welk…I don’t think we in the activities department will ever watch that show without thinking of Louise. She was very special to us and she is missed. God bless you and your family at this time.
