Ev B. Freed, 74, of Asheville, died on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Memorial Campus, Mission Hospitals. A native of Henderson Co., Ms. Freed was a daughter of the late Guy and Virginia Bowers. Ms. Freed was a graduate of Central Piedmont Community College, in Charlotte, and received a Master's Degree in Education from Appalachian St. University. She later taught at several community colleges, most notably at Central Piedmont, in developmental studies. Ms. Freed is survived by her sons, Michael D. Arrington and wife Cherrye Wilson, of Hendersonville, Timothy Arrington and wife Sherry, of Surry, VA, and Mark D. Arrington and partner Bobby Hill, of Asheville; sister, Margaret Dalton; brother, Paul Bowers; grandchildren, Timothy Neal Arrington, Carissa Anne Arrington, Frankie Fisher, and Wesley Carver; and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service for Ms. Freed will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. Flowers are accepted and appreciated, or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060.

    I MET YOUR MOTHER AT HEART PATH FROM THE FIRST TIME I MET HER SHE ALWAYS HAD A FRIENDLY HELLO AND WAS ALWAYS CHEERFUL I WILL REMEMBER HER MOSTLY BY CARRYING TIC-TAC’S SHE ALWAY’S HAD THEM AND ALWAY’S OFFERED THEM TO ME SHE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED BY ME.

  8. I will greatly miss Ev’s friendship, humor, and dedication to making Merritt Park the best community in Asheville. Though small of stature,
    she was not detoured by challenges or obstacles. She had a finely-tuned sense of justice–for herself, her neighbors, and for the community at large.
    My deepest condolences go out to her loving sons and their loved ones at this time of their loss.
