Fred Baxter Lemmonds, 80, of Oakley, died Sunday, January 16, 2000, in an Asheville hospital.

Mr. Lemmonds was born in Pacolet, SC, was a son of the late Dewitt and Venrie Allen Lemmonds, and was married to the late Doris Williams Lemmonds.

Mr. Lemmonds served in the US Army Infantry during WW II and was among the troops who landed on Normandy Beach in 1944. For the next months he participated in the Battle of the Bulge going as far as Cologne on the Rhine River. For this service he received several meritorious awards.

Following his return from the service after the war, he became employed by Clements Flower Shop and Greenhouses. “Mr. Fred”, as he was affectionately known, was a pioneer in the nursery and floral industry. He became an owner in 1975 and remained active until his death.

He was well known for his love of mankind as well as for his wonderful sense of humor.

He is survived by three daughters, Debra Ogle and Penny Wilson of the home and Betty Arrowood of Fairview; three grandchildren, Claudette Jenkins, Tony Arrowood, and Tracy Robinson; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Jenkins and Chris Wilson; three sisters, Emily Millwood, Sue Padgett and Kathleen Capps; and two brothers, Jack and Eugene Lemmonds. He is also survived by his close friends and associates at Clements, John Grooms and Lloyd Smith.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 18, at Green Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Donald R. Furniss officiating.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
