Hendersonville - Frederick J. Gress, 80, of 101 Riverwind Drive, died Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the Elizabeth House. Fred was a native of Peru, Illinois and the son of the late Frederick Peter and Mary Wertz Gress. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and a veteran of the US Army National Guard of Illinois. He was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Fred is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna Henneman Gress; six children, Mary, Stephen, Elizabeth, Margaret, Fred II and Anne. Also surviving are Stephen's wife and children, TouSain Prock Gress, Craig and Michelle. Fred is survived by one sister, Mary Jane Flaig and was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Grimshaw. A funeral mass will be said at 10:30 am Friday, September 3 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 pm, Thursday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.
