G. Gary Hutchins, 84, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2017, at his residence. Born in Black Mountain, Gary was a son of the late Lt. Col. Cecil C. Hutchins, Sr., and Lois Hunsucker Hutchins. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Cecil C. Hutchins, Jr. Mr. Hutchins was an Army veteran and had worked with the NC Farm Bureau for 38 years. Since retiring in 1996, he has enjoyed working on the family farm in Leicester. He was involved with the Leicester Community Center since its beginning in 1957. He was a member of the NC and Leicester Grange for over 50 years. He served the Leicester Community as a 4-H Club leader, and served as Scoutmaster for Troop 9. Mr. Hutchins was an active member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where he served in numerous leadership positions. His family includes his wife of 59 years, Brenda Hutchins; daughter, Lynda Strotman (Scott); sons, Dean Hutchins (Krista) and Mark Hutchins (Jennifer); grandchildren, Adam (Caroline), Hannah, Matthew, Grant, Ella, Luke, Bryan, and Caroline; and a sister, Virginia Towe. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 18 at Bell United Methodist Church Cemetery in Leicester. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Curtis Goforth at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends at a reception at Asbury immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Capital Campaign at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 171 Beaverdam Road, Asheville, NC 28804. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. I’ll miss Gary! He always come in the door with a smile on face & always made an effort to talk & ask how my family was. I loved hearing him tell stories about farming or just about old times & always giving a huge. He was always great to do more then his part. Especially when it came to the youth of our community! He’ll be greatly be missed by me & so many others! Gary was a one of kind!

  6. I just found out of Gary’s passing today. He will be missed dearly by this neighborhood. I always enjoyed seeing Gary on his tractor or mending his constantly-broken fence! He seemed to be his happiest when he was outside working around the farm. He was such an impressive and hard working gentleman! We send our fondest condolences to Brenda and the rest of the family.
