Garry Eavenson

September 29, 1947 ~ October 6, 2004
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Garry Eavenson, 57, of 17 Holly Lane, Asheville, died Wednesday, October 6, 2004.
Mr. Eavenson was born in Haywood County and was a son of the late Thomas D. “Tom” Eavenson. He was also preceded in death by nephews Ricky Brian Eavenson and David Allen Walker. He was a member of New Morgan Hill Baptist Church.
He was a graduate of Wingate University and was the retired vice-president of Appalachian Stove, Inc. He was loved and respected by all who knew him as a hard-working Christian man. His family was the most important thing in his life and his grandchildren will miss their dear “Grandpa”.
In his retirement he was an avid golfer and will be missed by “the gang” at High Vista Country Club.
Mr. Eavenson was a self made man, having built his own house and business with his twin brother. He was also renowned in classic car circles as an expert restoring classic Chevrolets. It was said that he could do more with a hammer and screwdriver than most could do with a garage full of tools. Those who knew him know there will never be another like him. He helped so many people and refused any thought of acknowledgment for his good deeds. Those who didn’t know him could never realize the genius and talent this man possessed. He can only be described the way his wife often put it: “He was a special man.”
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Peggy Caldwell Eavenson; one daughter Teresa Renee Eavenson of Asheville; a son, Garry Benton Eavenson and his wife Kellie of Rock Hill, SC; his mother Valerie Eavenson Holloway and step-father, the Reverend Virgil Holloway of Waynesville; two sisters Patsy Plemmons and her husband Larry of Surfside Beach, SC and Peggy Messer and her husband Manson of Waynesville; three brothers, his identical twin and best friend Barry Eavenson and his wife Ailene of Asheville, Tommy Eavenson and his wife Vicki of Canton and Scotty Eavenson and his wife Kathy of Waynesville; and two grandchildren Benton Caldwell Eavenson and Olivia Rae Eavenson of Rock Hill.
A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with the Revs. Virgil Holloway and Roy Houston officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the building fund of New Morgan Hill Baptist Church, 370 Lake Drive, Candler, NC 28715.

Words cannot express how sorry we are about Garry. We will always have fond memories of his coaching Stuart in Little League. We were impressed that he and Preston Wagner always taught good sportsmanship instead of winning at any cost. We will keep all of you in our prayers.
Gary, thanks for being a good neighbor and friend for many years. You will be greatly missed by everyone on Holly Lane. Godspeed
Gail
Our thoughts and prayers are with each and everyone of the family.
WHERE DO I BEGIN. OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS I HAVE GROWN CLOSER & CLOSER TO GARRY. WE ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. USUALLY CARS & GOLF. EVERY CHANCE HE HAD HE WOULD MENTION HIS GRANDCHILDREN WHICH HE LOVED VERY DEARLY. I NEVER MET ANY OF HIS FAMILY MEMBERS HOWEVER I KNOW HOW CLOSE THEY ALL MUST BE. ME AND MY BUDDYS WILL MISS HIM GREATLY & WILL THINK AND MENTION HIS NAME OFTEN. I WILL CLOSE BY SAYING ‘GOODNIGHT’ GARRY. HE KNOWS WHAT I MEAN. MAY THE LORD BE WITH THE EAVENSON FAMILY DURING THESE TRYING TIMES. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
Dear Peggy and family,
David and I have you in our prayers. We love you and will always be around if you need us. Please call on us at anytime.
You are great soldiers of the faith. God will provide what you need to get through this.

To all the family: Words absolutely cannot convey the grief that all of you must be feeling at this most terrible time. Your loss is so great as is all of those who knew him. He was a very special person. I worked for Garry and Barry for a while at Appalachian stoves and I can truthfully say that I never not even once saw Garry loose his temper or say anything out of the way to anyone. He had so many friends and our loss will be great. I can’t help but question why this terrible thing had to happen to such a good and loving family. It just seems that your tragedies have been more over the past few years than any family should have to endure. I just want you to know that you will all be in my thoughts and prayers. Garry was a very special man.and no one could have ever ask for a kinder more gentle boss than he was. I am so sorry.May God be with you and give you the strength to get through this time and just remember that through his promise in his Holy word that you will see Garry again someday soon. love& prayers to all of you.Lynda Hensley and husband Kenneth Hensley.
Having met Gary at High Vista about 5 years ago and playing golf 2-3 times a week with him since I cannot express what a loss this is. Just recently I had found out my assistant of 15 years was his stepsister, Donna. He was a great man and a great friend that we will always miss dearly. He didn’t drink, didn’t swear and was constantly bragging about his wife and grandchildren. He was so proud of his grandchildren. About the most excited he ever got was saying ‘good night or dawg!’. He was truley a role model for us all. Our prayers are with all his family especially his twin brother Barry whom he always referred to as his best friend. God Bless
May our prayers be with the family and friends of Garry. He will be missed.
To the Eavenson family,
I was a friend of Garry and Barry while attending Wingate College ’65-’67. I had just looked through my ’67 college annual and fondly remembered our friendships. I searched the internet hoping to reconnect our memories, but I found I was too late. I am so sorry! Garry and Barry were fine young men who talked fondly of the mountains. I will keep them warmly in my memory.
