George Leonard Austin passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the age of 82.
Born on October 11, 1942, in Candler, North Carolina, George was the beloved son of the late Albert and Meta Ingle Austin. After graduating from Enka High School in 1960, he began his career in construction before answering the call to serve his country. He deployed to the Gulf War in 1990 as a member of the 210th Military Police. George proudly served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 30 years, continuing his lifelong commitment to service and community.
A man of quiet strength, George was a charter member of Harvest Time Assembly and later found fellowship at Flat Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—tending to his garden, getting lost in a good western novel, and sharing stories and laughter with family and friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Shannon Lopez and Tanya Maddron; sisters, Barbara Ann Austin, Mary Frances Roberts, Wilma “Tootsie” Miller, and Kathleen Fish; brothers, Charles, Don, Paul, and Joe Austin; and brothers-in-law, Jim Roberts, Don Miller and Jerry Fish.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 47 years, Gail P. Austin; son, Chad Austin (Anna) and their son Brody, the youngest grandchild who brought joy to his heart in the later years; and daughter, Jennie Austin and children Tyler and Paige. He is also survived by grandchildren, Justin, Anthony, Darien, Brandon, Jordan and Nicholas; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Alberta Watts and Doris Revis (Jerry); sisters-in-law, Doris, Vivian and Linda Austin, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
A memorial service will be held at Flat Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Brian Hanrahan, on Wednesday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Hospice Care Staff and VA for their compassionate care. Special thanks to Dr. Jeff Nienaber, MD, Donna, his case manager, and Robert Moore, III, PA in Urology for their exceptional care of George.
George’s life was a testament to faith, family, and service. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
