Asheville ~ George Nicholas Koon, 84, died on Friday, November 6, 2009 in Givens Estate Health Care Center.
A life long resident of Buncombe County, he was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a veteran of World War II and past president of Asheville Oil Company.
He was the son of the late E. S. Koon and Irene Koon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. E. S. Koon, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; three children, Kay, Karl and Kathy, along with their spouses and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Michael McFarland officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Emmanuel Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 51 Wilburn Place, Asheville, NC 28806.

Hi, Janet that worked @ BBQ INN, for years, as Your waitress, sorry to hear of Nick, He and You was the sweetest people. I missed you guys even after I quit, My memeories of Nick I will cherish. Betty and Family, We just cannot believe Nick is gone. He was a member of our 408 member Class of 1943 at Lee Edwards and makes 220 of this class now known to be deceased. We are never ready to lose our loved ones. The only comfort has to come from our Faith in the Sovereignty of God and the manifested concern of caring friends. We were saddened to read of Nick’s
passing. Nick and I go back to 1941 when we made almost daily trips to the Y for weight lifting and in 1942 for a weight lifting meet in Charlotte. Although we didn’t see each other often I always thought of Nick as a best friend. Please accept our sincere condolences.
