Orange, New Jersey
Resided in:
Asheville, North Carolina
Gilbert David Grossman, MD of Asheville, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Gil was largely raised in Maplewood, NJ but made his way south in his late teens. He went on to receive his BS from Davidson College in 1958, with a Doctor of Medicine from Emory University in 1962. Gil continued with specialized training at both Georgetown University and University of California San Diego (Pulmonary Medicine), was accorded numerous academic appointments — as well as served in the U.S. Air Force as a Medical Officer (Captain).
It was at Emory that Gil met and married Jane David. Their ‘never-ending love story’ culminated in four children, and four grandchildren. Gil and Jane considered Atlanta their hometown, but retired to their beloved mountain home Asheville, NC in 2010.
In addition to an illustrious career and raising his family, Gil was active in his community, serving on the Institutional Review Board and Medical Ethics Committee of Mission Health & Hospitals of Asheville.
But for all who knew Gil, he loved happy hour, was a great storyteller … and never found a blue blazer he didn’t like. He and Jane absolutely loved spending their retirement years traveling extensively through Europe, indulging in their love of music as well as Jane’s special interest in collecting Carolina folk pottery.
He is survived by a family that adored him: daughter Leslie Jeffords; son G David Grossman, Jr and wife Letitia, with granddaughters Margaret and Sarah; daughter Marion G Mande and husband Christian Mande; daughter Caroline G Brown and husband Michael Brown, with grandsons William and Matthew. A private service will be held with immediate family.
For those that are moved to do so, the family asks that donations be made to any of the following organizations that had personal meaning to Gil: Parkinson’s Foundation parkinson.org, Givens Estates Resident Assistance Ministry givensestates.org/donate-giving-opportunities or the Emory University School of Medicine med.emory.edu/giving.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

I am sorry to hear of Dr. Grossman’s passing. Many fond memories of a great guy and loving family. You are all in my thoughts. Rev Ed Hillman
I had the privilege of working with Gil at Mission Hospital for several years. He volunteered for the Ethics Committee and for the Institutional Review Board. He was deeply intelligent, articulate, and kind. He was a gentleman. Prayers for his family, and all who loved him.
Dr. Gil has a special place in my heart. He called me little Reba and that always made me smile. I will never forget how kind he was when I called him about my Dad in 2007 (COPD caused by radiation). Such a beautiful soul. Rest in peace with your dear Jane. His memory will be a blessing to many.
Gil was always a gentleman and we enjoyed getting to know him.
We wish him peace and send our Love and blessings to his wonderful, adoring family
