Glenn Porter 'Peavine' Penland, 86, died Friday, February 19, 1999, at his residence, 365 Asbury Road, Candler.

A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Bron and Lula Daniels Penland.  He retired from Sealtest after 45 years as a wholesale milkman.

After his retirement, Mr. Penland was a regular at the WNC Livestock Yard every Thursday and enjoyed caring for cattle and mules.  His motto in life was 'it's better to laugh than cry' and his  laugh was recognized and loved by all who knew him.  He was a faithful and dedicated member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men.

Surviving are his wife, Ollie Faye Marshbanks Penland;   five sons, Ronald of Brevard, Stephen  of Forest City, Adrian and David of Candler, and Philip Penland of Skyland;  two daughters, Gail Moody of Waynesville and Glenda Shook  of Candler;  twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 4:00 pm Sunday at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Miller officiating.  Burial will be at Round Meadows Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kelly, Andrew, Chris, and Darrell Penland, Curtis and Cale Moody, and Brenning Shook.  George Penland will be an honorary pallbearer.

His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at other times will be at the home of Dan and Glenda Shook, 20 Glennwood Drive, Candler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Francis Asbury  UMC Building Fund, PO Box 67, Candler, NC 28715.

Mr. Penland will remain at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue until being placed in the church at 3:00 pm Sunday.
