Grady Howard Jr., 64, of Candler passed away Monday, June 23, 2008 at Memorial Mission Hospital. Born in Swain County, he was a son of the late Grady Howard, Sr. and Beatrice Woody Howard Cable. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Jim Howard and a sister Annette Cable. Mr. Howard was a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam War where he served three tours of duty and was awarded two bronze stars with oak leaf cluster. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Joan Haney Howard; two sons, David Howard and wife Sabrina and Grady Alan Howard all of Candler; two daughters, Tracy Reagan and husband Kevin of Candler and Tina Lunsford and husband Steve of Leicester; seven brothers, Dennis Howard and Danny Cable of Gastonia, Marvin Woody Wiggins of Leicester, R.L Howard, Wade Howard, Harold Howard and Doug Howard all of Murphy; six sisters, Patsy Blanton, Diane Sherrill, Darlene Anderson, Becky Sulzback, Katie Guy all of Gastonia and Betty Roberson of Murphy; nine grandchildren and one great-grand son. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. James Hutchison officiating. Interment will follow at Brown's View United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. His family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Veterans Homeless Home on Tunnel Road through the ABCCM, 30 Cumberland Ave., Asheville, NC 28801.

I have fond memories of growing up with David and getting to know and love Grady and Joan, I appreicate everytime you all carried me to a ballgame and let me stay the night. Getting to watch our kids play ball with his grand-children was a treat. We love you and are thinking of you in this difficult time.
