Gregg Randall Calkins,71,of Asheville NC, passed away at Mission Hospital in Asheville after a long illness.

Gregg was born at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA to the late Lt.Col. Darreld Calkins and Marilyn (Kibbe) Calkins on July 3,1954 and attended West Florence High School in Florence SC, graduating with the class of 1972.

In 1990, he graduated from the Respiratory Therapy program at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, TX. During his respiratory therapy career, he worked in Texas, Florida, and Vermont. His last place of employment was Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin VT, before retiring to Asheville, NC in 2018.

Gregg lived life to the fullest. His passion was music and playing his drums. He also loved fishing, golf, and travel. One of his favorite trips was to Scotland in 2014, where he was able to walk the Old Course at St. Andrews.

In addition to his parents, Gregg was also preceded in death by an infant son, Ryan.

Gregg leaves behind his wife Laurie (Holderby) Calkins; three sons Kurt Calkins and his wife Rachel of California, Derek Calkins of Kentucky, and Preston Calkins of Colorado; two brothers Ken Calkins and his wife Theresa of Kentucky, and Cary Calkins and his partner Krystal Fancey of Georgia.

A service and celebration of life is planned for November in Florence SC. Groce Funeral Home’s Tunnel road team is assisting the family.

  5. Dad, I woke up Sunday and thought to myself, “I haven’t called dad in a while..” before realizing. It happened with mom too all those years ago, so I guess it’s part of the process of letting go.
    Thank you for the lessons you taught me. Thank you for the music and music knowledge. We’ll catch each other next time around.
