Grovene Davis Dowell, age 75, passed away peacefully at home with her family on Thursday, January 14th.

Grovene was the daughter of the late Grover and Lucille Arrington Davis of Clyde. She was born in Newport News, Virginia, but was raised in Western North Carolina and spent most of her adult life here as well. Grovene loved her family wildly and took every opportunity to be with her grandchildren. She loved a good beach escape and she loved to spoil her family and friends. She loved her church family at First Baptist Church of Asheville, and was an active volunteer in the community.

She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Danny Dowell; daughter Kisha Donahue of Atlanta; son Jason Dowell and wife Margie of Fletcher; three grandchildren, Brady Donahue, Presley Dowell and Oakley Dowell; sister Hilda Ippolito and husband Joe of Travelers Rest; brother-in-law Frank Dowell and wife Beverly of Independence, VA; multiple aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Givens Resident Assistance Ministry, 2360 Sweeten Creek Rd, Asheville, NC 28803.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. There are no words to express how heartbroken I am at the loss of Grovene. So many special memories have flooded my mind. Grovene has shown nothing but grace, kindness and sweet spirited nature in the years I’ve been blessed to know her. She loved her family and friends unconditionally and served as such an example of a true lady. Danny, Kisha, Jason, Hilda, you will all be in my thoughts and prayers as you venture into this new stage of life. I will always hold each of you dear to my heart.

    Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Jason & family, Kisha & Family, Hilda & Family. I was blessed to work with Grovene a couple of years during my career at Bank of America. I have many fond memories and funny stories that come to mind during our time together in Consumer Loans at Patton Avenue. (we won’t say how many years ago).
    She was truly a delightful person in my life and I will never forget her sweet presence. Our sincere condolences.
