Harold Brown Almon

A native of Anniston, AL, he had been a resident of Asheville since 1925 and was a son of the late Spurgeon and Marie Dillard Almon.
Mr. Almon retired from American Enka in 1981 as manager of employee services with 44 years service. He was a former member of Board of Directors, Mountain Ramparts Health Planning Inc.; Asheville Junior Chamber of Commerce; West Asheville Kiwanis Club; Regional Board of Management Development NC Community Colleges; and Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association.
He served four years on the Internal Evaluation Committee for the School of Technology and Applied Sciences, Western Carolina University. In Cooperation with Implementation of the School's present Industrial In-service degree program in 1959. The Uniqueness of the program received recognition in Life Magazine in 1962 as ''The Factory-Man's College Plan''. He also served on the Advisory Committee for the Western Carolina University Undergraduate Program in Social Welfare 1968. He was an Instructor for Asheville-Buncombe Technical College in the evening school program, former president of the Enka Lake Club; former member of the NC Society of Safety Engineers and the WNC Chapter of Training Directors. He attended the University of NC - Asheville and Western Carolina University; was a former member of Asheville Navy Reserve and a World War II Navy Veteran.
He was a member of Enka Baptist Church.
He is survived by his step-mother, Belle Almon of Asheville; wife Hazel Coffey Almon; daughter, Joyce Almon Rowden of Asheville; sisters, DeEtta Robbins of Wilmington, NC, Frances Horton of Asheville, Rebecca Chatman of Marion, NC; brother, Edwin (Ted) Almon of Hendersonville and two grandchildren, Melissa Lindsey and her husband Bill, and Ken Rowden and his wife.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with Revs. Ron Brown and G. Scott Lynch officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery.
His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
We love you Harold, you were a fine man in so many ways. We know that you are no longer in any pain and that you are in such a better place now and can live forever. We will take care of Ms. Hazel , we miss you and love you
