Hazzie R. Bishop, 80, of 112 Liberty Road, Candler, died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Hospice Solace Center.
Mr. Bishop was a son of the late Alvin L. and Emma Sitton Cairnes and the foster son of the late Charlie and Minnie Sitton Bishop. He was also preceded in death by brothers Owen Cairnes and Ike Cairnes, sister Ruby Cairnes, step-brother Leon Lister and step-sister Nellie White.
He had lived in Buncombe County for most of his life and was retired from American Enka. He was a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church and the Western Carolina Beagle Club.
He was a beloved husband and father and is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Bernice Hoxit Bishop; one daughter Linda Houck and her husband Steve of Oklahoma; a brother Howard Cairnes of Beaufort, SC; a sister Clara Radcliff and her husband Lamar of Asheville; step-sisters Esma Lister of Brevard and Lila Maxcy and her husband Edwin of Texas; a special “church adopted granddaughter”, Kelly Riddle Crawford; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Fox officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Plemmons, Richard Sluder, Vernon Rhodes, Ross Robinson, Marlyn Grindstaff and Frank Melton. The Primitive Quartet will be honorary pallbearers.
His family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and suggest that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to Maple Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Carroll Cauble, 1064 Charlotte Highway, Fairview, NC 28730.
