Mr. Clay was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late J. Bryan and Edna Lynch Clay, Sr. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Baldwin in 1995, a brother, J.B. Clay, Jr. in 1996, and a sister, Marjorie Nockow in 1999.
He was a Navy veteran of WW II and was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. He was a retired driver with Paving Enterprises, where he worked 38 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Fite Clay; two daughters, Gail White of Asheville and Suzanne Lee Rice of Orlando, FL; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. H.D. Houck officiating. The Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team will provide military honors.
His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Tuesday and from 1 - 1:45 pm Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and at other times will be at the home of Gail White, 92 Shady Oak Drive.
