Hilda Young Smathers

Hilda Young Smathers, 93, of Candler, died on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Aston Park Health Care Center. A native of Haywood Co., Mrs. Smathers was a daughter of the late DeLoyd George and Bessie Smathers Young. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Homer H. Smathers, who died in 2011; and by two brothers, Bill Young, and D.G. Young, Jr. Mrs. Smathers had retired from Chunns Cove Nursing Home, where she worked as their Nutrition Supervisor. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Smathers (Joe), of Candler; sons, David Smathers (Kathy), of Candler, and George Wesley Smith (Judy), of Oak Ridge, TN; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service for Mrs. Smathers will be at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Ed Worley officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery.
