J. Howell Sams, 87, of Curtis
Creek Road, Candler, died Monday,
Oct. 19, 1998.
A native of Buncombe County, he
was the son of the late Oscar and
Sophronia Green Sams and
husband of the late Martha Ullom
Sams.
He was a retired employee of
America Enka, a member of the
VFW Post 9939, the Hominy
Masonic Lodge # 491 and was a
volunteer at the Asheville VA
Medical Center. He was an
engineer with the US Army in W.W.
II, serving in the European Theater.
He is survived by a daughter,
Patricia Meeks of Candler; two
sisters, Pauline Sams Morgan of
Rock Hill, SC, Virginia Sams Davis
of Candler; a grandson, Steve
Meeks and a great-grandson,
Michael Meeks.
Services will be 2 pm Thursday in
the chapel of Groce Funeral Home
conducted by the Rev. Roy Kilby.
Burial will follow in White Rock
Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from
7:15 pm until 8:15 pm Wednesday
at the funeral home.
