Jack L. Culbertson, Sr, 76, of Leicester, died Thursday, November 7, 2002, at Hospice Solace Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was born April 14, 1926 to the late Lelon C. “Red” and Retta V. Harkins Culbertson. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Van H. Culbertson, Sr. and Joe C. Culbertson. He was employed in earlier years with Taylor & Murphy Road Construction and he owned and operated Grace TV Sales and Service for a number of years. He retired from the US Postal Service in 1986 after 17 years of service. He was an accomplished steel guitar player and machinist. He loved gardening, fishing and hunting and was a member of Western Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Culbertson is survived by two sons, James R. Culbertson and his wife Donna Kay of Leicester and Jack L. Culbertson, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Elon, NC; four grandchildren, SeDonna, Bethany, Hannah and Graham Culbertson; two sisters, Hazel Holcombe of Asheville and Dot Roberson of Hurdle Mills, NC and two brothers, L.C. Culbertson of Chapel Hill and Kenneth Culbertson of Hurdle Mills. Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Sunday at Western Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Edwin Worley officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Saturday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Flowers will be accepted and appreciated or memorials may be made to Western Chapel United Methodist Church, South Turkey Creek, Leicester, NC 28748.
