James Patrick “Patrick” Warren passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 65. Born on December 19, 1959, in Richmond, Virginia, to Carlotta Autrey Warren and William Franklin Warren, Jr. Patrick lived a life defined by generosity, creativity, and an unwavering love for people and beauty.

Patrick is survived by three of his four beloved children: Bonnie Warren (partner Lalanya), William Warren (wife Lauren), and Sarah Warren. He was a proud and playful grandfather to Mason, Caden, and Dillon. Patrick is also survived by his brother William Franklin “Frank” Warren III. He is preceded in death by his son Jared Warren (2002), brother Neal Warren (2014), father Frank Warren, Jr. (1975), step-father Donald L. Roberts (2009), and mother Carlotta Roberts (2016).

Patrick embraced many paths over the years, each rooted in care for others and a desire for meaningful connection. He provided for his family by running his own carpet cleaning business and serving as a certified nursing assistant. Ever the adventurer, he also spent time traveling with a carnival, joyfully helping set up rides that brought delight to communities across the country.

A self-taught and soulful musician, Patrick found his truest joy in playing the hammered dulcimer—an instrument as unique and expressive as he was. He also played the concertina, mountain dulcimer, and autoharp, filling the spaces around him with melody and peace. His music was a reflection of his spirit: searching, gentle, and full of heart.

Patrick was deeply moved by kindness—especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene, when the Black Mountain community came together in resilience and care. He longed for a freer, more compassionate world, where judgment gave way to understanding. He gave freely to those in need, loved animals, and embraced laughter, art, and honest moments with others.

Though a Christian in belief, Patrick often found spiritual connection outside the bounds of organized religion—through nature, music, and simple acts of love.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Homeward Bound of WNC, an organization close to their hearts, in honor of Patrick’s memory. To donate, please visit: https://homewardboundwnc.org.

A private celebration of life will be held later this year.

“You lived your life like a gentle song—
full of color, light, and grace.
Now you rest where there’s no sorrow,
only peace, and starry nights.” – Don McLean
