Joe F. Wooten

Joe F. Wooten, 60, of 121 McKinney Road, Asheville, died
Tuesday, January 12, 1999.
A native of Gaston County, NC he was the son of Lillie
Jones Wooten of Gastonia and of the late Cordell Wooten.
He was a retired conductor with Southern Railway with 23
years service. He played professional baseball, signing with
the St. Louis Cardinals and playing for them and the Houston
Astro minor league systems for several years. He was a
coach for the past 6 years in the Hominy Valley Youth
League, coaching baseball, football and basketball.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Diana
Davis Wooten; two daughters and their husbands, Selina and
Arthur Ledford and Andrea and Don (Diesel) Monroe of
Asheville; three sisters, Hilda Greene of York, SC, Rosemary
Grubbs of Durham, NC, Joyce Dockery of Gastonia; a
brother, Bennie Wooten of Dallas, NC and five grandchildren.
He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.
Services will be held at 2 pm Friday in Oak Hill United
Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Norman A.
Hubbard. Honorary pallbearers will be former ball players of the
Hominy Valley Youth League. Interment will be in the church
cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 pm Thursday at
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue where Mr. Wooten will
remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the
service.
