“A Life Well-Loved” - written by his beloved Daughter, Dara
He loved the North Country of New York where he was born and raised --- a star basketball and baseball player and ‘Best Boy Singer’; picked apples in his family’s orchard and gorged himself on Michigan Red Hots at Nitzis.
He loved the Navy, stationed aboard the USS Bennington during the Korean War and where he made cherished life-long friends.
He loved his young family, started at the tender age of 23 and soon blossomed into a one-in-the-front, three-in-the-back station wagon full of little girls who grew up proud to be known as “The Downs Girls”. He loved the men who loved and married those girls.
He loved his life as an educator, coach, counselor and confidant to his students in the Bay Shore, NY schools.
He loved a good cocktail, an impromptu party, a hearty laugh and the Yankees.
He loved to dance and could clear a dance floor while everyone watched his accomplished Lindy or graceful two-step.
He loved his soul-mate Susan and his daughters-by-choice, Debbie, Sharon and Teri.
Good thing he loves daughters.
He loved his adopted city of Candler and the paradise he and Sue created in the mountains, which became the epicenter for family gatherings.
He loved his many grandchildren and his “Littles”, who brought him great joy and comfort.
He loved us all and we love him. FOREVER

Family of Lisa Flynn, Eddie, Audrea, Crystal, Erin, and Jaclyn our love and deepest sympathy goes out to you. Your broken hearts we hold close to ours, sending you our strength through prayer and please know we are here for you always. So thankful to have had the pleasure of meeting Mr Downs several times, through out the years. My your memories bring you comfort knowing he loved you so much.
Sue, Briana, Downs Family … I have lost not only a beloved Navy shipmate but also a close friend. I met him on my June birthday, 1953, when I checked aboard USS Bennington, New York Naval Shipyard. From that point forward, a lifelong friendship, which resulted in our wives joining us as we attended several ship’s reunions about the nation, also visits to each other’s homes in Candler and Paradise, California. … I think what I appreciated almost more than anything was his healthy sense of humor and relaxed view on just ‘living life.’ Aboard we shared challenges of the flight deck; ashore we enjoyed the adventures of energetic youth. (I could not have asked for a better superior on Bennington.) … To you, Sue and Briana, I send my warm sympathy. Please explain it your families. .. We Clarks send love! R.I.P., Happy Jack!
So sorry for your loss but obviously blessed by his many wonderful years!!
