John Luther McClain

John L. McClain, 88, formerly of 60 Green Valley Road, Asheville, died Saturday, August 11, 2007, in a local nursing center. Mr. McClain was born in Lavonia, GA, and was a son of the late Carswell A. and Nina Campbell McClain. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sue Flynn McClain, six brothers and one sister. Mr. McClain was a 1934 graduate of Warren-Wilson College and served as a sergeant-major with the US Marine Corps. He retired in 1980 from American Enka where he worked since 1936 and he was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, J. David McClain and his wife, Judi, of Brillion, WI, three grandchildren, John David McClain II of Asheville, Christina McClain Schultz and her husband, Matt, of New York City, and Jacquelin McClain of New York City, and one great-granddaughter, Mia Jai. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Green Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Whitted officiating. Memorials may be made to Baptist International Missions, PO Box 9215, Chattanooga, TN 37412.

  2. I worked with John for a number of years at the Enka Plant and thought a great deal of him. I was always particularly impressed with his positive attitude and his pleasing smile. My sincere sympathy to his family and close friends

  3. My position at American Enka brought me in daily contact with John. He became, not only a trusted co-worker, but a best friend. Everyday that we didn’t go to the ‘club’ to eat we would go over to his house, check on his garden and yard and eat a tomato sandwich. He was truly a gentleman and will be greatly missed.

  4. i worked at American Enka in the nylon carpet sales dept for many years and talked to Mr. CcClain at least once a day re/shipments and etc. it was a privilege and an honor to have known him.

  8. John was my uncle, I didn’t see him much but have wished many times that I had spend more time with my family. His Brother Broughton was my father.
