John R. "Jack" Grafing

John R. "Jack" Grafing passed away at his home on June 23, 2017 at the age of 95. He was born on May 13, 1922 to Eleanor and Richard T. Grafing of Brooklyn, NY. Jack served as a radio operator in the US Navy during World War II, and was stationed in Australia. Later he became a proud member of the US Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association (NCVA) and regularly attended annual reunions.
Jack worked for Chase Bag Company in New York City until he was promoted to Office Manager of their Toledo, Ohio plant in 1962. Ten years later, he was transferred to the former Strawberry Hill Press in Asheville, NC. He retired in 1987.
After Jack retired, he worked on the incorporation of the town of Fletcher, NC, and was active as a member of the Board of Directors of their ABC liquor store. Jack and Norma enjoyed many travels during his retirement, and Jack was especially proud of his Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C.
Jack was married to his beautiful bride, Norma, for 66 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Ellen Carscaddon. He is survived by his wife Norma, his son Richard (Betsy) Grafing, and his grandchildren John Grafing, Beth Grafing, Megan Carscaddon, Katie Carscaddon, Lindsey Carscaddon, and great grandchildren Georgia Carscaddon and Gabe Swanger.
The family would like to express special thanks to Megan Carscaddon, the staff of Visiting Angels of Asheville, and Care Partners Hospice for their continued loving care. Memorial Contributions may be made to: Care Partners Hospice; 68 Sweeten Creek Rd.; Asheville, NC 28803.
Visitation will be held at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 4 until 6 PM. Interment will be Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

I hope he was not ill too long.
So sorry for your loss. He was a great guy and will be missed by many. I enjoyed meeting him and Rick’s mom at Ragtime Rick’s and always enjoyed talking with them.

Dear Rick and Betsy. So sorry to learn of your father’s passing. Such a great generation he was born into. Such wonderful patriots! So glad he was able to live such a long life.
