John S. "Jack" Upshaw

John Slaughter Upshaw, (Jack), 90, a longtime resident of Fairview, died Saturday, August 28, 2004, at the Fairview Health Care Center.
Mr. Upshaw, the son of the late James Bruce and Elizabeth Candler Upshaw, was born in Villa Rica, GA. During World War II, Mr. Upshaw saw action aboard a Navy Destroyer assigned to duty in the Atlantic. Following his retirement from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer he became a resident of Fairview, which was home for his sisters of late, Ruth Alexander and Annie Florence Eberhart.
Jack loved the mountains of Western North Carolina and the Fairview community. He was preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Bird, Ruth Alexander, Annie Florence Eberhart, Mallie Argo and brother William Upshaw.
Survivors include a brother, McAllister Upshaw and his wife Nancy of Fairfield Glade, TN; several nephews and nieces; and his caring friend, Don Fox of Fairview.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Old Fairview Sharon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Glenda Bramlet officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
