John S. Sedgwick, Jr., 70, of Asheville, died on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at his residence. A native of Oak Park, IL, Mr. Sedgwick was a son of the late John S. Sedgwick, Sr., and Shirley Galloway Sedgwick. He was also preceded in death by a son, John S. "Johnny" Sedgwick, III, who died in October, 2003. Mr. Sedgwick had worked as a public school teacher for 16 years, and worked as a special education assistant for nine years. He enjoyed teaching, but was passionate about his work with special needs students. He was an avid and lifelong sports fan, but above all else, he was devoted to his wife, children, brother and sisters. Mr. Sedgwick is survived by his wife, Judy Super Sedgwick; daughter, Dr. Mary P. Sedgwick, of Candler; sons, Charles J. Sedgwick and wife Jeanette, of Crystal Lake, IL, and Thomas Matthew "Tom" Sedgwick and wife Trish, of Plant City, FL; sisters, Sally Mourad, of Acushnet, MA, Debbie Prosser, of Bellingham, WA, and Janet Stinard, of Las Cruces, NM; brother, Jess Sedgwick, of Racine, WI; grandchildren, Heather, Tyler, Haley, Harmony, Molly, Jonathan, and Madison Sedgwick; great-grandchild, Ayden Sedgwick; and his special companion, his daughter's "Leader Dog" Lucy. Services for Mr. Sedgwick will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the CarePartners Adult Day Care Center, 68-A Sweeten Creek Rd., Asheville, NC 28803. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
