Joyce R. Garbo

Joyce R. Garbo, 90, of 15 Mayfield Road, Asheville, died Friday, July 20, 2001 in the Hospice Solace Center. A native of Alba, TX, she has been a resident of Asheville for 30 years. She was a daughter of the late Chennie M. and Sue Rossalia Grindstaff Ballard. She was also preceded in death by her husband Steve Joseph Garbo Sr. who died in 1986. Mrs. Garbo was a former bookkeeper for Rand-McNally Book Company, and a member of the Colonial Literary and History Clubs. Also she was a member of St. Eugene’s Catholic Church along with the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Eugene’s Women’s Guild. Her survivors include her daughters, Phyllis Crawford and her husband Tom of Asheville, Cathy Gort and her husband Rich of Lake Stevens, WA, Marie Flanigan of Centralia, WA; son, Steve J. Garbo Jr. of Asheville; sister, Ernestine Greenwood; and brother David Ballard both of Tulsa, OK. She was also grandmother to twenty, great-grandmother to twenty-four, and great-great-grandmother to nine. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Father James K. Solari will officiate with burial following in Lewis Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
