Justine Martha Lavin

February 25, 1939 ~ December 27, 2009
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Justine Martha Lavin, 70, of Edgelawn Rd., Asheville, died peacefully Sunday, December 27, 2009, at her home.
An Asheville native, Mrs. Lavin was a daughter of the late David and Ruth Diamond Lowenberg. Mrs. Lavin had retired from Beverly Hanks & Associates, where she worked as a real estate broker.
Although Justine lived nearly her entire life in Asheville, where she was an active member of the community, she gained a worldly perspective due to her love of international travel.
She had a loving and kind heart, and a sharp intellect, and she cared deeply for her many friends.
Despite being ill for the past 3 years, and being badly injured in a car accident, Justine maintained a positive attitude and keen sense of humor. She is remembered by those who loved her as an exceptional mother and wife.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Lavin, to whom she was married for 51 years; daughter, Jodi Lavin-Tompkins; son, Jeffrey Lavin and sister, Trudy Pokross and her husband, Charles; grandchildren, David and Jonathan Tompkins and Tiana Lavin; niece and nephew, Michelle and Matthew Pokross, and great-nephew, Brandon Pokross.
A memorial service for Mrs. Lavin will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home with Rabbi Batsheva Meiri officiating. The family will receive friends at the home at other times.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Amyloidosis Foundation, Inc., http://www.amyloidosis.org

We thought the world of Justine and will miss her very much.
Dear Lavins:
Justine and I had some wonderful times together these last few years, despite what fate provided. She was quick to laugh, fun to be with, warm and kind, non-judgemental -a fine well-rounded woman. My heart goes to each of you as we share the loss. What a great Mom and Wife she must have been. We’ll miss you every day Justine!
Justine and I were classmates in 1956, but we were not friends. I got a second chance to know her in 2000 and I thank God that I did. She was an inspiration to me and I will miss her very, very much. Joe, my heart goes out to you. I will keep you and your children in my prayers.
We were both new students at St. Genevieve’s in the sixth grade. With names like Lamprinakos and Lowenberg we were next to each other in roll call and everything else—not to mention that we were different. She was my best friend, my muse, and my angel. I was going through a terrible time; her kindness was my salvation. And yes! she was bright and witty. We reconnected recently and much too briefly. I was able to thank her for all she did for me and planned to come and visit her soon. I am forever grateful.
Trudy, you were an adorable and unforgetable little sister. You, Joe, and all of your families are in my prayers.
We will miss Justine and remember her grace and charm for many years; she had a great outlook and was a joy to know.
My thoughts and prayers are with Jodi and her family during this difficult time.
We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend Justine…Our wonderful memories and the good times we shared will endure forever….Barbara and Norman Block
