Margaret Katherine “Kathy” Rion, 60, of North Blue Ridge Rd., Black Mountain, died on Monday, May 31, 2010, at Asheville Health Care Center. A native of Hartsville, SC, Ms. Rion was a daughter of Richard George “Dick” Rion and Sarah Trowbridge “Sally” Rion, of Myrtle Beach, SC. Ms. Rion received a BA in Psychology from Furman University in 1972, and an Associates Degree in Occupational Therapy Assistance from Southwestern Community College, in Sylva, NC, in 1997. While at Furman, Kathy was a member of Phi Beta Kappa-Senior Order and Chair of the Student Service Corps, and named to Who’s Who Among Students in Universities. She had worked as an occupational therapist at Madison Manor Health Care, in Mars Hill. She was later a member of Executive Women International, and of “Daughters of the King” Crusillo. She was a member of the Church of the Incarnation, in Black Mountain. In addition to her mother, Ms. Rion is survived by her sons, Daniel Rion Cavanna, of Morganton, and Paul Dushane Cavanna, of Asheville; and sisters, Susan Rion Wight, of Berkeley, CA, and Penny Rion Willocks, of Crofton, MD. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Church of the Incarnation, with Father Jim Swatzell officiating and Father Gerard Freeman assisting. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of the Incarnation or to the TEACCH Program to help autistic children. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
