Kenneth Steven “Steve” Lewis, 79, of Weaverville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025.

Born on February 20, 1946, in Springfield, Ohio, Steve was the eldest son of Lorraine “Rainy” Lewis and Pearl “Skeeter” Lewis. He grew up with a curious mind and a deep appreciation for how things worked, traits that would shape both his life and career. After graduating from Ohio State University, his path led him to Maryland, Kansas, and Georgia before he and his wife ultimately settled in the mountains of North Carolina.

Steve began his professional life in a government research role at Fort Detrick in Maryland and later built a meaningful career with Pfizer as a veterinary medicine representative. His scientific mindset shaped not only his work, but the way he approached every challenge in life, calmly, logically, and with unwavering thoughtfulness.

He was a kind and gentle soul, known for his warm presence and genuine compassion. Though he held strong political opinions, he never let differing viewpoints interfere with the relationships he cherished. Steve valued people far more than debates, and those around him always felt respected and heard.

A lifelong tinkerer and devoted DIY enthusiast, Steve was happiest with a project list in hand. Once he completed every home upgrade he could think of, he simply started again. He also loved reading, writing fiction, and tending to his yard, a place where he found both peace and purpose.

In August 1997, Steve married the love of his life, Nancy Lewis. A union born from a thoughtful matchmaking idea by their children. After a cookout introduction arranged by Nancy’s oldest son Justin, and Steve’s daughter, Katie, the pair quickly formed a deep connection. Their bond led them to elope in Hawaii, beginning what would become more than 28 years of devoted and joyful marriage.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; his daughter, Katie Joyce (Kevin); and his two sons, Justin Carter (Bridget) and Jonathan Carter (Britney), with whom he shared a close and loving bond. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Benjamin Carter, Ava Joyce, and Mia Joyce.

He was preceded in death by his three younger brothers, Richard, Daniel, and David, with whom he shared a lifetime of family stories and memories that remained dear to him.

Steve was an active member of Groce United Methodist Church and participated in several local writing groups, where he found friendship, encouragement, and inspiration.

A memorial service honoring Steve’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4th, at Groce United Methodist Church in Asheville, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Groce United Methodist Church Bell Choir, 954 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, NC 28805.

Steve Lewis leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Steve & I met at Parker Sweeper where we both worked, in 1966. We fell in love, were married 9/14/1968 & had a beautiful daughter (Katie) in 1978. We stayed friends.

  2. I met Steve when he and Nancy began dating, and I immediately knew that he would become a friend. He was a genuinely nice person; kind, soft-spoken, and interested in the opinions of others. Steve will certainly be missed! Condolences and much love to Nancy, Katie, Justin, Jonathan, and the three grandchildren.

  3. Steve was my eldest and last surviving uncle. He was a great and kind man. A great writer(even though it wasn’t my forte, He was able to paint the scene perfectly). I always knew him to be a kind, caring, and loving man. I never once heard or seen anything but love and kindness from him. I just cannot believe he is gone, just 30 days after my own father passed away. My love goes out to his loving wife Nancy and his beautiful daughter Katie and all of those that loved him. He is sorely missed already. Love you Steve, Rest easy. The only solace I can take is knowing you are with your brothers again.

  4. Uncle Steve,You were such a kind, gentle and intelligent man. I’ll cherish the times we spent together and I’m thankful that I was honored with being able to call you my Uncle Steve. Rest in peace

  5. I’m married to Steve’s brother Dan and he supported our love. He is the kindest most caring man anyone can meet. The world will not be the same without his presence. He touched so many peoples lives. His kindness to humans and animals will be missed. God bless and be at peace. We love you.

  6. Steve is our brother-in-law, and was always a kind soul with his interest in our family and our conversations
at family functions. We never doubted his commitment to Nancy and his family.
    Sincerely, Jim & Susan Jones
