Larry Charles Ownbey

larry ownbey
Larry Charles Ownbey, 62, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 20, 2005. After a brief illness he was called to his heavenly home. He was the son of the late Charles Robert and Hilda Morgan Ownbey. He was a 1961 graduate of Enka High School and a 30-year employee of Taylor Environmental/Fiji International. After leaving Taylor he was co-owner of Checkered Flag Auto Sales, Inc. until the time of his death. Larry coached in the Hominy Valley Youth League for over 20 years. He was a member of the WNC Classic Cruisers. He was an avid car show enthusiast and enjoyed traveling to car shows. He was an active member of Acton United Methodist Church. Larry dearly loved his four grandchildren and was interested in every aspect of their lives, especially school, church and sports activities. He attended their athletic events until his illness prevented it. Surviving are his wife, Linda Tallent Ownbey; a daughter, Jackie Ownbey Turbyfill of Candler; a son, Robbie Ownbey and his wife Kim of Candler; a step-daughter Lisa W. Whitaker and her husband Tim of Fairview; four grandchildren, Sydney and Carson Ownbey and Amanda and Jacob Whitaker; one sister, Rita Ownbey Laudenslager and her husband Jim of Garner; and one brother C.A. Ownbey and his wife Sally of Fairview. He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Ownbey Ebernickel. A funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Acton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Paul Hacklander, Neil Haynes and Steve Harris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. The true wealth of a man is not measured by the amount of money or worldly goods he has while he is here but rather by the friends he made, the lives he touched and the love he shared. Larry C. Ownbey was the wealthiest of men and will be greatly missed. Memorials may be made to Acton United Methodist Men, 171 Sand Hill School Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  3. Robbie, Kim, Sydney and Carson,
Our thoughts and our prayers continue with each one in your family. We did not get to stay for the memorial service because of Logan’s ballgame, but your Dad understood that. We did get a program and shared in the service on our way to WCU. What a beautiful celebration of his life and it brought back many memories for us. Not only childhood memories when they lived on Oakview and us as kids in the neighborhood, but all the ballfield memories we will carry with us always. Your Dad was a wonderful man and did a good job with his children. He will be missed by many but never forgotten. Rory got to be there to usher him into heaven and they are having fun together until we join them.
    Our Love in Jesus,
    Royce, Gwenda and Logan

  11. Robbie and Family

We are so sorry to hear about Larry. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

  12. Larry and I were cousins, born only 10 days apart. Since we went to separate school systems we only saw each other in the early years at family holiday gatherings, etc. However we ran together quite regularly during our high school years. Unfortunately I went away to college and never returned to Asheville except for short trips to visit my parents. I fondly remember our times together and was saddened to learn of his passing.

I wish I had been fortunate enough to know his family and witness the respected family man and member of the community that he became.

  13. Robbie, Kim & Family
