Leonard C. Driggers

leonard driggers
Leonard C. Driggers, of Candler, NC, died Saturday morning, February 2, 2013, at about 1:52 A.M. He was born November 19, 1932, to parents Henry K. Driggers and Coralee Mizell Driggers of Summerville, Berkley Co., SC. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Javotte Le Roy Driggers and his son, Stewart Andrew Driggers, both of Candler, NC. Len was in the U.S. Air Force for over 4 years with time spent in Korea and Vietnam. After this he attended the Citadel, Charleston, SC. Upon graduation, as an Engineer he spent time working with the COE, building a $2.5 million wharf. He received numerous Outstanding and Sustained Superior Performance Awards. For at least 20 plus years, Len was a Judge/or Chief Judge for the Buncombe County Board of Elections in the Candler area. He was a 33rd degree Mason of the Hominy Valley Masonic Lodge #491, with a total of over 40 years as a Mason. He also belonged to Shannon Lodge #404 of Colbert, GA, until he remitted to the Hominy Valley Lodge. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and associated with the Lions Club and the McCune Center. He enjoyed a yearly trip to the Indian Field Camp Ground, near St. George, SC, where for over 200 years people met for a religious Camp Meeting of one week. These camp grounds were used during the Civil War to house some military in training. There were only two years during the war that the Camp Group was closed. Len's favorite memories were going there at the end of each summer to meet with family and friends. Len volunteered many hours at Habitat for Humanity while in Candler. Francis Asbury United Methodist Church recently honored Len with a generous donation in his name for all his years of dedication and work for Habitat for Humanity. His work with FAUMC was one of the most personally satisfying achievements of his life. He felt it crucial to be the one welcoming new comers and visitors to the Hominy Valley Welcome Table and into our community of Faith, greeting all who entered the church with a handshake, a kiss or hug, and true devotion to our Lord with humility and love for the Lord, the Church, and the people. He was constantly helping others with only one request: He always said, "I want no reward or pay, just two words-'Thank You' ". Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Veranita Alvord officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, PO Box 67, Candler, NC 28715, and/or to Habitat for Humanity, 33 Meadow Rd., Asheville, NC 28803. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
