Lucille Garrison Wilson, 81, of Fletcher, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at her home, following a brave fight with ovarian cancer. Lucille received her Bachelor of Arts degree in education in 1959 from Women’s College in Greensboro and her Masters of Education in 1965 from UNC-Greensboro. She was an elementary school teacher in both the Burlington and Newton-Conover City Schools. She also taught in Statesville, Lenoir, Henderson County and Buncombe County Schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher’s sorority. In retirement, Lucille worked for 20 years at the Biltmore House as a host and tour leader. For nine of those years, she was a speaker’s bureau member, giving programs about Biltmore across Western North Carolina. She enjoyed history, antiques, crafts and nature. Born April 11, 1937 in Alamance County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Walter Holt Garrison and Marie McCulloch Garrison. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sara Jo Kruchten and brother, Walter Norman Garrison. Lucille is survived by her beloved husband and devoted caregiver of 47 years, John Donald “Don” Wilson; her cherished daughter Dr. Donna Lucille Earley, son-in-law Lee, and her awesome and dearly loved grandson, Alden of Atlanta; dear brother and sister-in-law, John R. Garrison and Kathy; sister-in-law, Barbara Garrison of Burlington, NC; nieces, Norma Marrin (Bernard) of Glen Allen, VA and Susan Harris (Shannon) of Burlington, NC; nephews, Rodney Garrison (Andrea) and Mark Garrison, of Burlington, NC; great-nieces, Sara Marrin, Barbara Ciccone (Jon), Mara and Cate Harris and great-nephew, Hayden Garrison (Kinsley). A Memorial Service to honor Lucille will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Asheville. Her family will receive friends at the church following the service. A Graveside Service to inter her ashes will be held at a later date at Union Ridge Christian Church Cemetery in Burlington, NC. Flowers may be sent to Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. Alternatively, memorial contributions may be made in Lucille’s memory to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to Mission Cancer Care, 21 Hospital Drive, Asheville, NC 28801. The family would like to thank CarePartners Hospice and Mission Cancer Care for their help and care of Lucille during her illness, especially nurse, Roxi Hanson and CNA, Kathy Philbeck.
