Mamie Leona Mack Chambers, 100, formerly of 283 Bingham Road, Asheville, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at Aston Park Health Care.
A native of Madison County, she lived most of her life in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late Jacob and Julia Plemmons Mack. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Zebulon Lee Chambers, Sr., a pioneer in Southern Gospel Music in WNC who died in 1978 and by her son, Z.L. “Bud” Chambers, Jr. who died in 1998.
Mrs. Chambers was able to celebrate her 100th birthday on March 4, 2006, surrounded by family and friends. She loved to cook for her large family and babysit the children. She was talented in crocheting and in her flower garden and will be remembered for her mischievous sense of humor and the twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes.
Survivors include a daughter, Mildred Hipps of Asheville; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 4:00 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Ray A. Hipps officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Baptist Church Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service and request that memorials be made to Highland Baptist Church, c/o Lucille Cassada, 112 Cassada Road, Marshall, NC 28753.

I can remember Mrs. Chambers and her family from my childhood. She lived a long, good life. I send my deepest sympathy to the family and especially to her daughter Mildred.
