Margaret Helen Ingram, a native of Arden and a professor of education at East Carolina University for 18 years and earlier at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, died in Greensboro, December 5 after a brief hospitalization.  She was 83.


After retirement in 1981, she lived in Oak Forest in Arden before moving to an assisted living residence in Greensboro earlier this year.
    Two sisters, Mrs. Frances Hayman Brown of Greensboro and Mrs. Eleanor Ingram Mallette of Durham and twelve nieces and nephews survive her.
Miss Ingram was born January 4, 1916 to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Oscar Ingram.  She attended Valley Springs High School.  She then earned an AA degree from Mars Hill College and graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University.  She went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her masters and doctoral degrees in education. From 1934 to 1955 she taught in North Carolina public schools, then became an assistant professor at the College of William and Mary in Norfolk.  After two years as a professor at the newly opened St. Andrews, she completed her teaching career at East Carolina University.  Upon retirement in 1981, she returned to her native Buncombe County and lived in Oak Forest.
She was president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Greenville, 1967-1968.  In 1970-1971 she was listed in Who’s Who Among American Women.


Services will be held in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian at 11 am Wednesday.
Interment will follow in Calvary Episcopal Churchyard.
The family will receive friends for 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309.
