Margaret Sparks, formerly of Asheville, died Monday, November 17, 2008, at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem following a long illness. A graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery in Fletcher, NC. Margaret was born in Asheville, one of eleven siblings born to the late Charles and Eva Towe. She was a graduate of the Buncombe County school system and of the Asheville Teachers College, a predecessor of UNC-Asheville. After college, she began a teaching career in Candler, NC, where she met her husband, the late Joseph "Sparky" Sparks. Margaret spent her entire career as a teacher in the Buncombe County schools. She was a gifted teacher to thousands of students and a mentor and role model for her fellow teachers. In addition to teaching, she sometimes held as many as three part-time jobs to insure that her sons would have good lives and good educations. Blessed with a rare combination of intelligence and common sense, she was a frequent source of counsel to all who knew her. Hundreds of times family and friends would make some variation of the statement, "Ask Marg, she'll know what to do". Margaret held herself and others to high standards, but she was also thoughtful, generous, self-sacrificing, proud, kind, and had a great sense of humor. A host of interests kept Margaret young and vital. Until late in life, she went on daily brisk walks; she also stayed active with reading, crossword puzzles, and her much-loved weekly bridge games. In addition, she enjoyed hosting parties and maintaining friendships that kept her spirit lively. She was also was a lover of nice clothes, big band music, dancing, and beautiful plants and flowers. In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by brothers Charles Towe, Aleck Towe, Mac Towe and John Towe, sisters Mildred Cochrane, Ailene Mallory, Maxine Sizemore, and Louise Tomberlin, and by a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sparks. She is survived by a son, Tom Sparks of Greensboro, and son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Donna Sparks of Clemmons; sisters, Peggy Cox of Asheville and Barbara Metcalf of Brevard; grandchildren, Brent Sparks and wife, Amy, of Huntersville and Garrett Sparks of Durham, and Matthew Sparks and Lindsay Sparks of Greensboro; great-grandchildren Kaelyn and Rachel Sparks of Huntersville, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting with the arrangements.

  1. so very sorry about ur mother, she was my 3rd grade teacher at
    valley springs (1965).
i always loved her and had often wondered where she was living.
what a great role model for young children, i will never forget her.

  2. Please accept my sympathy for your loss. Mrs. Sparks was my 3rd grade teacher at Valley Springs. She was a huge inspiration to me, so caring but firm, and loving when she needed to be. I retired from teaching after 31 years. She gave me a strong academic foundation during that time but, more importantly, tremendous respect and love for her as an outstanding teacher.

  3. My deepest condolences to the family. Mrs Sparks was my 3rd grade teacher at Valley Springs in 1971-72. She was always firm but also fun…and made sure you knew she expected you to do great things with your life. I can still remember standing at her desk reciting the multiplication tables!!! I’m sorry to hear of her passing….she had such an influence on hundreds of young minds. I will always remember Mrs Sparks.

  4. What a great lady! Mrs Sparks was my third grade teacher and a friend of our family. I have so many memories of fun and learning, one memory that always come back when I think of third grade is that was where I was when they announced the president had been shot and killed. Mrs. Sparks obviously stunned, reassured all that it would be alright. Fun, is my second memory…small green turtles escaping in our classroom and learning to do the limbo….there are many many more..she was one of a kind and who I will never forget! Pam Ducker McClure

  5. From reading previous signings, Mrs. Sparks was a 3rd grade teacher to many, including myself. She was a great teacher and I will always remember being that left-handed student in her class, that gave her such a fit. She wanted me to sit in a left handed desk, but it just didn’t work for me.

My prayers are with the family for their loss on Earth, but she is smiling down on all of us and will see us soon!

    Blessings,
    Nicki (Craig)

  6. We knew and loved Margaret as ‘Mimi Sparks’, grandmother to our nephews Brent and Garrett – sons of Donna and Jeff Sparks. She was a wonderful, courageous woman whom we will miss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret’s family and friends.

  7. Dear Tom, Jeff, Donna, and family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Margaret meant much to our family. She was a mentor to me when I joined the Estes Staff. She not only guided me at school but was a wonderful friend. Our family always knew Margaret would be there for us. We have wonderful and fond memories of her. We will miss her very much.

Love, George and Jane Kramer and family

  8. Mrs. Sparks was my third grade teacher at Valley Springs. She taught me my multiplication tables and to this day I remember her ‘Wizard of Oz’ yellow brick road that we got to go down as we learned each set of numbers. She was stern yet loving, one of those elementary teachers that you always remember. I am sorry for your loss.

  9. Jeff and Donna,
Please accept our condolences in the loss of you Mom. It was a long fight and you were very faithful in your care of her.
    With deepest sympathy.
