Maria Farmer

maria farmer
Tuesday morning, our family lost a strong, loving, funny, loyal, courageous woman. Maria Farmer died at home in Fairview, surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Colombia, moved to the Panama Canal Zone as a young woman to find work and there, met an American soldier named Jessie Farmer. They married and moved back to the United States. She came to the mountains of NC, a Catholic, Spanish speaking woman some 60 years ago when they had rarely seen anyone from outside, and she became a loved and integral member of the community. She raised 4 children and helped to raise lots of grandchildren. She loved animals and was kind to the elderly. We all loved to hear her describe the foods of Columbia, particularly the fruits, which she loved. She always knew what "they" would say about any situation, and would share her wisdom with us. She is survived by her three daughters, Gladys Gurley (Robert), Maria Horton (Keith) and Sue Hudgins (Kenneth); a son, Larry Farmer (Patti); 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie; her parents, Pedro and Escolastica Blanco Diaz, her brothers, Antolina, Florencio, Domingo and Lorenzo, and her sister, Ana Clovis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Patrick Cahill at 11:15 am Friday at St. Eugene Catholic Church, after which the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall. The Rosary will be recited at the church at 10:15 am and graveside rites will be at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Spring Mountain Community Center, PO Box 73, Fairview, NC 28730. We love you Granny Farmer. Peace be with you. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Thinking of you and your loss but also of the fun times I’ve had with Maria. She had a wonderful spirit.

  2. Gladys,Maria and Susie I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember when we were neighbors on Pelzer St. Your mother was so sweet, I always enjoyed coming to your house, I remember your mom once making a chicken and spanish rice dish that was so good. I remember going to mass once with her and some of you girls, I had never been in a Catholic church and for a young girl it was quite an experience, and I remember her explaining things to me.I will never forget that nor will I forget her. My heart goes out to all of you at this time and I will keep you in my prayers. May GOD bless you.

  3. I’m sorry for you loss. May the bright light that Maria shone while here on earth continue to illuminate your lives, even in grief. May God bless all who loved her.

  4. Maria,
I’m so sorry, Mama is gone. For her I am grateful to have known her and glad she is at peace. Wishing you all great memories and many hugs.

  5. So sorry to hear about the loss of one of the sweetest lady. I went to school with Sue one of my very best friend, I will be praying for your family with love!

  6. She sounds like a beautiful and courageous spirit and I know she will be missed. How wonderful that she passed that loving courage and strength to those children and grandchildren. Peace surround you all.

  7. Our deepest sympathy. She was indeed a remarkable woman! What a huge hole you now have in your family. May all find peace in the assurance that a good life has been lived and now she’s able to rest in Glory!

  8. Sending thoughts of love and peace to Maria and Keith and the rest of your family and friends. We runners enjoyed your dear mama’s support and know you will miss her deeply.

  9. Mrs. F, No one could have asked for a better mother-in-law than you. I have always admired your ability to ‘Go with the flow.’ Whenever the going got tough, you never hesitated to call on ‘JESUS.’ I will never forget you babysitting Tyler and Fraser when they were infants and singing ‘Food around the corner’ while waiting for me to return from work. Everyone has their ‘snake oil remedy’ and your was ‘Vicks.’ Just about everything could be cured with it. I agreed with you about the male penguin and yes they should hatch the egg between their toes!! You always said ‘hard boiled eggs were good for the brain.’ You must have eaten plenty. Your culinary specialties were rice pudding and beef tongue. You enjoyed the simple things in life. You were never high maintenance! Whenever you visited our home , the only TV channel we needed was the nature channel. You never attempted anything without qualifying it first by proclaiming ‘Lord Willing.’ You were a good woman but you did have a mischievous side….once you burned a cooking pot of mine but instead of telling me about it, you hid it on my wooden deck under a bucket. Well, boiling vinegar in the pot saved it and sanding the burned spot on the deck fixed that too! May the Good Lord welcome you with open arms! Rest in peace!

  10. I am so sorry for your loss. Very soon Jehovah God will bring our loved ones back to us soon. I just lost my mother about two months ago, I understand.rev. 21:4 helps a lot. It reminds me of Jehovah’s promises for the future. May God be with your family.

  11. We are so very sorry for your loss! Mrs. Farmer was such a sweet lady and we enjoyed the times we were able to spend with her when she visited Virginia. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with you all!

  12. I am so sorry for your loss. I pray that GOD will give you peace as only he can do when you lose someone so special.
