I loved Aunt Marie, one of my fondest memories of her was our vist to her farm in Hendersonville with my sister Linda. We were about 7 and 10 years old then and now we are 62 and 65. Our mom, Zade sent us for a week, I think we wanted to come home in 3 days. it was more work and not play and we got a good appreciation of what it takes to run a farm. We were up at dawn and in bed by 8pm. There were chicken eggs, picking and stringing green beans and bring in the cows from the far fields and woods. The cows had large bells and the sound seemed to surround us and I still get lost in the woods. Tommy scared us by telling us the room over the kitchen had no floor and if you opened it you would end up in the basement. Wonderful!..Uncle Pres would squirt us with milk as he milked the cows. Aunt Marie, made the best butter and buttermilk. I remember the churn by the fireplace. And she made the best cornbread on her wood burning stove. They are memories I cherish. She loved her animals, and that passed on to us. She talked in that wonderful slow southern drawl and nothing ever seemed to rush her or get her rattled. I am so sorry that her life was shortened by the accident that put her in a convalescent home. I think she pined away for her farm and animals. I always expected this tough old farm girl to live to be a 100 or more. That accident stole her life.
Tommy, Steve and GW, we are so sad this happen, and I am sure you will dearly miss your mom. Parents, even frail and sick ones help connect us to the earth with their shared memories. After a while there is no one left that remembers what you did as a child and it is a great loss.
Our Mom Zade and my husband Gary , sends their sympathy as well.
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs.Barnwell.You are all in our hearts and prayers at this time.May God bless you and keep you in his arms.
AUNT MARIE, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL CHILDHOOD MEMORIES I SPENT WITH YOU ON YOUR FARM,WAY TOO MANY TO LIST HERE BUT THEY ARE ALL IN MY HEART.I THINK MY LOVE FOR ANIMALS STARTED VISTING YOU, AND I ALWAYS ADMIRED WHAT A STRONG AND LOVING WOMEN YOU WERE. TO MY COUSINS TOM,STEVE AND GEORGE, I’M FACING THE SAME SITUATION WITH MY MOM,AND IT’S CLOSER THEN I WANT IT TO BE. BUT YOUR MOM LIVED A FULL LIFE DOING WHAT MADE HER HAPPY, AND THAT IS A BLESSING. JUST KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU NEVER KNOW HOW STRONG YOU ARE UNTIL YOU REALIZE THAT ONLY YOUR FAITH IN GOD GIVES YOU THE STRENGTH TO GET THROUGH THIS. LOVE YOUR COUSIN LINDA RAUCCIO.
