Born in:
Cary, NC
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Martha was born in Cary, North Carolina and spent her childhood in Richmond, Virginia. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from The Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). She taught private piano lessons for many years.
Much of her adult life was spent homemaking, as she moved around the country more than 15 times. Being in a Newcomer’s Club was a way of life and helped her get to know the area and make new friends. She had a zest for life and her love of people prompted her to work in several volunteer organizations helping others. One of the opportunities she most enjoyed was being a hospital ombudsman in five of the communities where she lived. She was a people person and will be remembered for her warm smile and helping hand. She leaves many fond memories to be cherished by those who knew her.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and always had room for one more friend in her life. She always made time to listen to people who needed help, companionship, or simply conversation. Empathy and compassion ran deep within her being. She enjoyed nature, music, traveling, and sharing life experiences with people she met along the way. She loved all creatures and they always brought a smile to her face.
She is survived by her son Doug Vaughan and his wife Mary; her son Dave Vaughan and his wife Callie; step daughters Michelle Pauly and Sherri Strange and her husband Don; grandchildren Gerald “Jerry” Vaughan, William “Mac” Vaughan, and Emma Vaughan; step-grandchildren Sharon and Matt Murray, Christine and Seth Lemerond, and David and Dena Pauly; her sister-in-law Mildred “Mitzi” Picton and her husband Jack; nieces and nephews and four step-great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Arrangements have been made with Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden. Services will be delayed until the Covid pandemic subsides.
Memorials in Martha’s name may be made to Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, or Manna Food Bank in Asheville.

I just today learned of Martha’s passing. I will always see her dressed in red and black with her beautiful posture walking Nicky the poodle along Hobson Mill Drive. No one loved community more than Martha. My deepest sympathy to her family. She was a truly beautiful woman in every way. Please know how frequently those of us in her old neighborhood think of her. This has been a very sad day for the Phillips family.
A truly beautiful woman. I just learned of her passing today. I’ll always remember her dressed in red and black, perfect posture, walking Nicky the poodle along Hobson Mill Drive, speaking to everyone on the way. No one loved community more than Martha, and those of us in her old neighborhood think of her frequently. This is a sad day for the Phillips Family. Our deepest sympathy to all of you.
