Martha Gasperson Butler

Mrs. Butler graduated from Asheville Normal and Western Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree in education. She began her teaching career in 1938, teaching thirty-nine years, until her retirement from St. Eugene Catholic School in 1977, where she taught her last fourteen years. Previous to that, Mrs. Butler taught fourth grade and Intermediate Latin at Plonk School of Creative Arts. Mrs. Butler was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was the oldest member of the church and taught Sunday School for many years. She was especially proud of the many years she had perfect attendance.
She is survived by two sons, Troy Butler of Skyland, Marvin and daughter-in-law, Carolyn R. Butler of Arden; daughter, Genevieve Butler of Swannanoa; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The oldest of nine children, Mrs. Butler is survived by sisters Frieda Bailey of Skyland, Jean Ballard of Whittier, California and Myrtle Pierce of Eden, NC; brothers, Ray Gasperson of Skyland and Roscoe Gasperson of Boynton Beach, Florida.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her husband, Ben C. Butler, daughter-in-law, Carolyn M. Butler, grandson, David Bruce Butler, sisters, Irene Searcy and Winnie Henderson and brother, Thomas Gasperson.
The funeral services will be held Sunday, April 8th, 2 P.M. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Overlook Road with the Revs. Cecil Robinson and Jack Plemmons officiating. Burial will follow in the New Salem Baptist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 7th, from 7 until 8:30 P.M. at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road where she will remain until being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
