Mary Louise Penland Currie, lovingly known as “Mountain Momma”, 74, of 83 Vermont Avenue, Asheville, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Mission Hospital.
A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Erwin and Mary Louise Peeler Penland and was also preceded in death by her husband, Milton F. Currie, who died in 1980. She worked for General Electric Supply and for MB Haynes Corp. as a dispatcher. A former member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she enjoyed reading the paper daily and working the crossword puzzle and formerly played bingo at several locations.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth M. Currie and his wife Karen of Candler and Steven F. Currie of Asheville and a sister, Nancy Foxx of Burnsville.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Marion Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted and appreciated or donations may be made to Mountain Mobility, 20 Davidson Drive, Asheville, NC 28801.
