Mildred Sluder Culbertson, 95, of Leicester, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at her home. A native of Buncombe Co., Mildred was the daughter of the late Clyde and Fannie Mae Foster Sluder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Van Culbertson; son-in-law, John Chapman; sister-in-law, Wilma Sluder; one sister, and two brothers. Mrs. Culbertson was a member of Western Chapel United Methodist Church, where she played piano for more than 50 years. She is survived by her daughters, Judy Chapman and Sharon Wilsdon (Tom); sons, Van "Tom" Culbertson, Jr. (Rena) and Ronnie Culbertson (Mary); brothers, Bill Sluder, Rex Sluder (Georgia), and Riley Sluder (Iris); seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The graveside service for Mrs. Culbertson will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at Western Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Phillip Chance will officiate. Her family will receive friends at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue beginning at 2:00 p.m on Friday prior to the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Western Chapel United Methodist Church, PO Box 1657, Leicester, NC 28748.

  1. Judy, Sharon and family: My sympathy to each of you in the loss of your sweet Mother. Judy, I remember how gracious she was when I would come home with you before a ballgame when we were in high school. May the loving hand of God grant you peace and comfort during your time of sorrow.

    We just saw that our sweet Mamaw Cubby passed. We loved her very much! She took excellent care of Courtney and Drew while in the daycare. I have many fond memories of her.
