Mrs. Nellie Payne slipped away quietly at home in the morning hours of March 6, 2024. Her strong belief in the Lord carried her through her 90 years.

Born on May 30, 1933, to the late Eula Jarrett Payne and James Bascombe Payne, she was the second born in the family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Clarence Payne, her older brother, James Jr. Payne, and her younger sister, Ruby Marie Plantinga.

She was a native of Madison County and spent most of her family life in Buncombe County with immediate family members, finally retiring from Piccadilly Restaurant in 2000.

Surviving are a son, Chris Payne; two daughters, Pat Worley and Denise Walsh; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave., Asheville from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Rd, Asheville, NC 28804.
