Resided in: Columbia, SC

Norvelle S. Judd, 93, took God’s hand and walked peacefully into Heaven on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

Margaret Norvelle Shipman was born March 3, 1926, in Columbia, SC, the eldest child of Herbert A. and Audrey Dent Shipman. She and her family moved to Asheville, NC, when she was three years old where she grew up attending West Asheville Methodist Church – later to become Trinity – and graduated from Lee Edwards High School. She married Daniel Stewart Judd on December 8, 1946.

She and Dan were active in their church and community. They were members of the Sprinkle Bible Class and Norvelle taught the two and three-year-old Sunday school class for many years. She was quite involved in the many activities of her church circle and the Crib-to-College Club. Norvelle and Dan worked side by side in the hardware store and later in their accounting and tax firm. In 1968 Dan and Norvelle moved their family to SC and joined Union United Methodist Church in Irmo where they were active members of the Aline Leitner Fellowship Class. Norvelle was pleased to be associated with the Mattie Mathias Circle for many years – publishing the yearbook for most of those years. Dan was involved with the Lions Club and Norvelle published their monthly newsletter for many years, always drawing “Mr. Leo” in every issue. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, Hallmark TV, and murder mysteries.

Norvelle was predeceased by her parents; Dan, her loving husband of 60 years; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol Shipman Johnston [John]; daughter-in-law, Susan Kilgore Judd; and numerous other beloved family members.

She is survived by her brother, Bert Shipman [Ruth]; children, Dan, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; Mary Margaret of Lexington, SC, and Oscar [Leesa] of Lyman, SC; grandchildren, Guy Wood [Faith], Judd Wood [Michelle], Oscar Judd, Jr. [Carman], Amanda Judd Anderson [Mike], Frances Judd Dove [Alex], and Margaret Danielle “Maggie” Judd; great-grandchildren, Daven Wood, Domonic DeMascola, Dylan Dove, Ella Margaret “Molly” Dove, Porter Anderson, Pearl Judd, Palmer Anderson, and Susannah Ruth Dove; honorary grandsons, Alex Vinson and Jonathan Nash. Additionally, she is survived by nieces, nephews, “adopted” son, Don Abbott, and other extended family including Carol Porter Stephen [Mike] and Doug Wood [Becky]. The family is most appreciative of her caregivers: Brittnee, Cynthia, Ethel, Jackie, Margaret, Rita and Sugar as well as the dedicated staff of Abbey Road Hospice. Special thanks to wonderful neighbors who kept a constant eye out for her as well.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Union United Methodist Church, 7582 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons, Herb and Llewellyn Hames, Lewis and Arlene Milligan, Bob Moseley, Tim and Susan Vinson and members of the Aline Leitner Fellowship Sunday School class. Visitation will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.

Graveside services will be in Green Hills Cemetery in West Asheville, NC, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2019.
