Pamela “Pamee” Cecile Mitchell, 66, of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025.

Born on February 24, 1959, at Mission Hospital/St. Joseph in Asheville, Pamee was the beloved daughter of Donella McClendon and Cecil David Mitchell. She graduated from A.C. Reynolds High School in 1977 and went on to earn her degree from Mars Hill University, graduating with the Class of 1982.

Pamee had a fulfilling 13-year career as a flight attendant with Southwest Airlines, where she made lifelong friendships and touched countless lives with her warmth and joyful spirit.

Adventurous at heart, Pamee loved skiing and spending time outdoors with friends. She enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach with family and friends, creating treasured memories by the ocean. She found joy and peace in her cabin at Wolf Laurel and on the slopes she cherished so deeply. Pamee also loved biking and hiking through the mountains, and could often be found relaxing with a crossword puzzle in hand — a quiet pastime that balanced her vibrant, active spirit. Pamee had an amazing sense of humor, full of pure silliness and a contagious love for life that made every moment with her unforgettable.

Although she never had children of her own, Pamee was a loving and devoted mother figure to her many nieces and nephews. Her selflessness, kind heart, and unwavering concern for others were evident to all who knew her.

She is survived by her sisters Laura Harbison and Donna Morrow (Tom); her nieces and nephews Jessica Long (Thomas), Alex Cochran (Tanner), Mitchell Harbison (Kaley), Cecil “Buddy” Owens (Sara), Annie Morrow, Preston Morrow, and her beloved dog, Hootie.

Pamee was preceded in death by her parents, Donella and Cecil Mitchell, and her brother, David Mitchell.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Pamee wished for donations to be made to the American Lung Association in her memory. Her family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional lung transplant team at the University of Virginia for the dedicated care, compassion, and support they provided throughout her journey. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and she will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Pamee’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16, at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, located at 72 Shoals Road, Arden, NC. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 PM.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My heart is with all who are suffering this loss, from family to friends. Pamee was the most gracious and wonderful person I’ve ever known, and my life was greatly enhanced and bettered just from knowing her. I have so many wonderful memories, and wish there could have been more. I will so miss her beautiful smile, impish sense of humor and kindness, but I know I will see her again. Thank you for being you, Pam. We all aspire to be half as lovely as you.

  2. My prayers are with all of you who love Pamee, especially Laura and her kids who I love and know like my own family. Pamee had a special way of making every one of us friends feel like her own too. Whenever I would see her she would give me a big hug and ask about the things that were current in my life, or about my husband. She always made me feel so loved and I loved her too. I’m praying for you all.

  3. I met Pam over 40 years ago at Mars Hill and she was one of my truest friends when she passed. I loved her heart and will miss her forever

  4. Pammie and I met at Mars Hill College and our friendship as sisters now continues in my memories. I love her and will miss her.

  5. Ralph and I met Pamee 60 years ago when we were first married and moved to Biltmore. We had so much fun with Pamee, Donna, Laura and David those many years ago. She was always laughing and wanting to watch the “grown-ups”, loved scary movies with bowls of popcorn. We always hoped to see her when we flew on Southwest, but were never lucky enough to be on her flight. We will miss you, Pamee.
