Pearl Smith Gillespie, 93, of 118 Mailon King Road, Leicester, died Thursday, December 12, 2002, at a local retirement home.
A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Riley and Della Moore Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawson G. Gillespie, who died in 1971; a daughter and son-in-law, Lula and Paul Lusk and a step-son, James Lemuel Gillespie. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Mrs. Gillespie is survived by a daughter, Martha Ashe and her husband Allen of Cross, SC; a son, J. C. Gillespie and his wife Karen of Leicester; a daughter-in-law, Shelia Gillespie of Leicester; a step-daughter-in-law, Minnie Bell Gillespie of Leicester; fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 3:30 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Bobby Smith and Joe Sellers officiating. Burial will follow at Western Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 pm Saturday at the funeral home.

If you are related to Nelson Gillespie, I think either I may have heard him speak of her or something- either way- I’m very sorry for your loss, she looks like a sweet lady. My prayers are with you.
Sorry to hear the sad news about Pearl.That was the last of the Smith brothers and sisters. I am Roy & Bea Smiths daughter.
Sorry we were unable to come to visitation. Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this time. Pearl was a very sweet and dear lady. She was a special person.
