R. BROOKS HARRELL ARDEN – Reuben Brooks Harrell, Jr., 81, of 187 Locust Court, Arden, died Sunday, August 23, 2009, at the VA Medical Center. Mr. Harrell was born in Rocky Mount and was a son of the late Reuben Brooks Harrell, Sr. and Vergia Vaughn Harrell. Mr. Harrell was a disabled Navy veteran of WW II, a life member of DAV Chapter 2 of Asheville and the American Legion Post 2 of Asheville. He was an active member of Arden First Baptist Church until becoming homebound and had volunteered at the VA Hospital and with South Buncombe Youth Leagues. He was elected to the Who's Who in North Carolina in 1973. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ina Perry Harrell; two sons, Lee Harrell and his wife Wendy, of Fletcher and David Harrell and his wife Nannette, of Arden; two brothers, Sidney Harrell and his wife Marianne, of San Antonio, TX and Thomas Harrell of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Jessica Harrell, Benjamin Harrell and his fiancée Kristen, Katie Harrell, Keith Harrell, and Michael Tanguay and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Arden First Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeffery Hudson and Ollis Revels officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hendersonville with military rites provided by the Henderson County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian and will be at the home on Locust Court in Arden at all other times.

  1. My deepest sympathy to all of you. I know Brooks is in a much better place and he is probably giving my mom a hard time right now. I miss all the reunions we shared at Cool Springs and the great food. The loss of a loved one is never easy. Please find comfort in knowing God is taking care of everything until we all reunite again.

Brooks and Ina were always special people to us and I too will never forget the family gatherings at Cool Spring Baptist Church in Eure.
