Richard "Rick" Hines, 43, of Tipton Hill Road, was called to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, January 14, 2008. A native of Garland, Texas, he was the son of Pauline Adams Hines of Garland and of the late Billy Earl Hines. Rick was an employee of WilsonArt for the last 10 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He has been a resident of the Asheville area since 1990 and has in the past served in various churches as youth pastor, Royal Ranger Commander, deacon and as a Sunday school teacher. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Katrina Canter Hines; one son, Zachary Hines of the home; his sister, Ronna Smith and her husband, Bart, of Forney, Texas; their children Miranda and Justin Smith and a great-nephew, Colton Smith. Rick is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Charles and Judy Canter, as well as his Mamaw, Lois Peak, all of Asheville. He also loved many other extended family members located throughout the country. Rick was a devoted husband and father who loved the Lord. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and loved his Texas Longhorns, Hook Em Horns! He lived his life to the fullest, never met a stranger, and always had a smile and an encouraging word. Rick will be dearly missed and remembered by all who knew and loved him. A funeral service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church on Shelburne Road conducted by Pastor Ralph Sexton, Jr. and Pastor Jerry Young. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 P.M. at the church. A private graveside service will be held at Green Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Asheville Christian Academy Hines Scholarship Fund (581-2200).

  31. Katrina & Family,
I’ll never forget the awesome chance I got to know Rick during the drama of 2006 as ‘Mary & Joseph’. Katrina, he always had amazing things to say about his wonderful wife and was always talking about ‘family fun’! When I would sing in Choir on Sunday Mornings, I would always see his face in sincere worship to the Lord each Sunday. I know he’s dancin in the streets of Gold. I continue to pray for your comfort and that the Heavenly Father take you in His arms. He will be missed, but his memory and the fingerprints of the Lord will remain in the lives of people he touched for eternity.

  32. My family and I wish to extend our deepest sympathy in the loss of a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. We know Rick was a true blessing to all. A true warrior for the Lord above. On the morning of his departure, the Lord looked down and said, ‘Well done my warrior’, it’s time to come home. And while we weep and mourn, I’m sure Rick would say to us, Do not cry for me, for I am home with my Lord. We love all of you and will pray for you all daily. And remember, Rick will be standing at those pearly gates to greet us when it’s our time to go. We will all see him again. What a glorious day that will be, to meet our Lord and all of our loved one’s gone on before us. You are all in our thought, prayers, & hearts. With sincere love & sympathy….. Dyan, Joe, Cody, and Caci Garcia.

  33. Rick was such a great inspiration to alex and jon. Jon and I were looking at Royal Rangers pictures this past Saturday. We know your loss, but know he is in heaven with granny. We love you.

  34. Katrina and Zach, you will be in our daily prayers. We loved Rick and will miss him greatly.

    The memorial service was beautiful.
Zach, you made us all proud with your wonderful comments and memories of you Dad.

  35. It seems just a little while ago that I was in a Sunday school room listening about Love. I am glad that I had an opportunity to witness with ease and clarity that which no one can teach, but must own in character and pass on by example. Dear Mr. Hines, you will be missed. God bless and keep you Mrs. Hines and young Mr. Hines.

    ‘He who has gone,
so we but cherish his memory, abides with us,
more potent, nay, more present than the living man.’
    Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

  36. Our family wants you to know that you and Zach are in our prayers. Rick was a blessing to us and we were very happy to have you join us in whorship at Trinity. May God give you comfort and peace at this difficult time. We can rest in the blessed hope of seeing our love ones again. May God bless you.

  37. Katrina and Zach,
We share in your sorrow over the loss of Rick. He was such a wonderful man. He had a great smile and beautiful spirit. He always had a kind word and a big heart for all of Zach’s friends. He encouraged Sam, and was an inspirational Christian role model for Sam as well as everyone at Emmanuel. We have such a fond memory of the limo ride for 8th grade graduation–Rick had as much fun as the boys! We know words cannot fully express our sympathy, but know that we will always remember him and his kindness. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
    We love you,

  38. We are truly sorry for your loss. Mr. Hines was a great blessing to the Emmanuel family. He will always be remebered for the loving man that he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Zach.
~Larry, Barbara, Caitlin, and Erin Williams.

  39. Katrina, Zachary and family, We are so sorry for your loss. We are praying for you. Rick was a wonderful Husband and Father, and Christ shown in his life. We love you. Leslie, Sheila and Jennifer King

  40. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. As a next door neighbor, we watched Rick grow from a child to a fine young man. We will always remember & love him.

  41. Ricky was a wonderful person, and I know he will be greatly missed. We are praying for God’s peace and comfort for your family.

  42. Our prayers are with all of the family during this time. We have known Rick’s mother for almost 20 years through her neighbors Dana & Martha Moses.

  43. I never met you but your son sits next to my daughter in 2 classes. I will never pretend to know why God chooses whom when or why. My heart Goes out to your son and wife. My daughter Megan hugged me monday so hard I was expecting the ‘daddy I found a car I want’ speach. But It was because of the saddness she felt for your son. I am so confused as to why God called you home and I hope to learn the reason, but to you and your family please know that even in your death, you brought me and my family closer. Please know that if there is anything I can do for the family.

  44. Katrina and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your husbands passing. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
    Ron and Audrey

  45. Katrina,Zachary and family our hearts and prayers are with you. Rick was a wonderful person and we love you all. He was so thoughtful and friendly and we love being your neighbors. If you ever need us we are always here for you.

  46. I lived across the street from Ricky as we all grew up. I remember Ronna hitting the tennis ball on the garage door for hours and hours and Ricky bouncing across street as we decided what to do for the day…me, Margie, Shelia, Brian, Jason and Ricky. Ricky Always had his smile on his face and I can still hear his laugh. He was a great friend. Many years ago I just happened to be at my mom’s house when he was in town and his mom’s and he hadn’t changed at all….still smiling and laughing. I was so proud for him as I heard an update on his life. As we all grew up there is such a place in my heart that Ricky holds. What an honor to have known him and I know he made a difference in many, many lives. My love to Ms. Pauline, Ronna and Ricky’s precious family.

  47. Our dear Zach & Katrina: There are no words.. Many memories, as ACA parents, baseball buddies, basketball warriors and fellow believers, we shared so much and became close it seems in a short period of time. Our hearts are heavy but our victory is great and now he has the rewards of his journeys. He is talking with our Savior and Lord. He is singing with the angels. He is rejoicing with family members & friends….. waiting on you both to join him. Knowing him knows a humble man. Some of the memories we hold dear of him is the love for his family, after ballgames watching him holding hands with you going to the car waiting on Zach, talking over the game with other fathers but always breaking a moment to compliment another player, as his parents walked by. He was a man of honor and true sweetness that is sometime lost in the world and life. We will miss his smile & kindness.
Our love, Carl, Debbie & Grant Petty

  48. Rick was a great man that loved the Lord. He always put a smile on everybodys face. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

I love you so much and miss you but you will never be forgotten. You were always worried about me and I want you to know the last time you were here you helped change my life for the better and I know that’s why God sent you to Tx in August.I always couldn’t wait to see you and couldn’t wait for you to come visit and I know we’ll meet again someday. I love you so much! Miranda and Colton P.S.Don’t worry, everything is fine!

  57. Dear Katrina, I’m so sorry for your loss and your entire family’s loss. Rick had some good family and friends welcoming him home. Jesus is faithful to be near us as we adjust to our loss. Ken still seems very near me. Love and prayers.

  58. Dear Katrina and Zach:
We pray God will strengthen you as you suffer the loss of your husband and father. One thing is clear just from knowing him as briefly as we have: he dearly loved you both. The basketball and baseball stands won’t be the same without him. We love you and want to be here for you.

  59. KATRINA,

THE WAY I CAME TO KNOW AND LOVE RICK WAS COINCIDENTAL TO SAY THE LEAST. HE CAME TO MY OFFICE SEVERAL YEARS AGO, INTRODUCED HIMSELF, AND TOLD ME THAT WE HAD A MUTUAL CONNECTION. HE WENT ON TO EXPLAIN THAT YOUR MOTHER IS BEST FRIENDS WITH LINDA CANDLER, WHO LIVES IN LYNCHBURG, VA.
I WAS SHOCKED, AND REALIZED THAT WE DO LIVE IN A SMALL WORLD, AND THAT GOD BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER FOR SPECIAL REASONS. RICK WAS MY SPECIAL REASON. HE INFLUENCED ME IN MANY POSITIVE WAYS, AND I WILL ALWAYS THANK GOD FOR BRINGING RICK INTO MY LIFE. I KNOW THAT HE IS IN THE PRESCENCE OF THE LORD, AND IS WAITING FOR YOU TO BE REUNITED ONCE AGAIN.

YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW THIS, BUT THE IRONY OF THIS STORY, IS THAT YOUR MOTHERS BEST FRIEND, (LINDA) AND MY BEST FRIEND (WANDA) ARE SISTERS, AND THAT THEY BOTH LIVE IN LYNCHBURG, VA, WHERE I WAS BORN AND RAISED. RICK WOULD FREQUENTLY COME TO MY OFFICE AND SHARE THE ‘LYNCHBURG’ NEWS WITH ME. THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I ALREADY KNEW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, BUT IN RECENT MONTHS HE SHARED INFORMATION WITH ME THAT I HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF. HE ASKED ME TO PRAY FOR JASON CANDLER, WHICH I DID, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. I SAW RICK TWO WEEKS AGO, AND SHARED SOME PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH HIM. HE TOLD ME THAT HE WOULD PRAY FOR ME, AND I KNOW THAT HE DID. I TRUSTED HIS LOYALTY AND FRIENDSHIP COMPLETELY. HE SHOWED ME PICTURES OF YOU AND ZACHARY. THE LOVE HE FELT FOR BOTH OF YOU WAS THE MOST GENUINE AND PURE LOVE THAT ANY MAN COULD HAVE FOR HIS FAMILY. IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. HE TOLD ME ABOUT ZACHARY’S NEW GIRLFRIEND, AND ABOUT HOW HE WAS GETTING HIS DRIVER’S LICENSE. I THINK HE WAS MORE EXCITED ABOUT IT THAN ZACHARY WAS!

HE WAS SO SERENE, AND AT PEACE WITH HIS LIFE. THAT IS SUCH A RARE GIFT, AND HE SHARED IT WITH ALL THAT WERE BLESSED TO KNOW HIM. HE WAS A HUMBLE AND HONORABLE GENTLEMAN, AND WILL BE MISSED BY ALL THAT KNEW HIM.

IF I CAN DO ANYTHING FOR YOU OR YOUR FAMILY, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL ME. RICK WAS SUCH A SPECIAL BLESSING IN MY LIFE, AND I WOULD LIKE TO HONOR HIS MEMORY IN ANY WAY THAT YOU WOULD HAVE ME TO.

I KNOW THAT GOD WILL GIVE YOU A SENSE OF PEACE AS TIME PASSES. YOU AND RICK WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHER IN SPIRIT. YOU SHARED AN AMAZING LOVE AND LIFE TOGETHER. AND, I KNOW YOU WILL AGAIN! HE WILL BE WAITING FOR YOU WITH OPEN ARMS!!!

  60. Dear Mrs. Hines and son, do not know you but my sister, Betty Harvey, worked with you, she was telling me about your loss, my heart breaks for you, God will comfort you, my prayers are with you.

  61. I knew Rick from Wilsonart. Rick always said hello and I did not even work the same crew as he did. I know, because he shared with me, his strong faith and love for God and his family. I hope and pray that this same faith will see you and your family through this very painful time. Take comfort in knowing that he is in heaven, and strength in knowing that you are in my prayers.

  62. There are times in our lives that we just do not understand why some things happen. This being one of them, we must look upward and put our faith in God that he had a higher purpose for Ricky. (That is how we knew him). We knew Ricky for over 20 years. We knew him to be one of the sweetest and most loving people we have ever known. His devotion to his family was amazing. To his wife and son, his mother, and his sister and her family we extend our sincere sympathy in their loss of one of God’s dearest children. In words that have given us comfort over the years, ‘If God Brings You To It, He Will Get You Through It’.May that knowledge give you peace in the coming days. Our love and prayers are with you.

  63. Katrina and Family. Each of you have always been such a blessing to me and I know that you will find peace in the faith that you have always shared with everyone else. Love you, Jen Lawson

  68. Dear Katrina & Zachary,
I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Rick will be sorely missed by all of us here at Wilsonart. I worked with Rick while he was the working in assembly. You may remember that Rick made the contacts and helped me get my son into cottilion a few years back. Rick talked with me often, he was most proud of the son you and him have raised into the fine Christian young man he has watched Zachary become. Rick’s walk with Christ led him to Wilsonart where he touched so many lives. The only solace in this is that we know where Rick is now and that we will see him again someday. If there is anything at all that I can ever help you with, please don’t hesitate to call me.

    Prayerfully,
    David DeBruhl

  69. Ricky, You will be deeply missed and alsways loved. I have only great memories of a sweet boy and precious man and fun memories of childhood days growing up on Bayshore. Kiss the LORD for me. Love, Penney Day Nichols

  70. Dear Katrina and Zachary,
There really are no words to express our deepest sympathy to you all, but please know that you have been held close to our hearts and we have been praying for you. You all were lucky to have a wonderful man to call husband and father. He surely did love you all, as well as your Mom and Dad and Mamaw. He deeply loved his Mom and sister too and would have loved to have been able to see them more often and spend more time with them. He was just a perfect example of a family man and he did bring many smiles to many people. He will be missed at work, but we will miss him as our friend. Even though we haven’t been able to spend a lot of time together, especially lately, we will always treasure the memories of his friendship and counseling!
We will especially treasure the pictures from our wedding. How wonderful that he has seen the face of the Lord now. Just knowing that he is in Heaven and will be waiting for you all should bring great comfort and peace. Please know that we are here for you anytime you need us. We do love you guys and thank God for the opportunity to know Rick and the Hines family!
    God Bless!
    Our Love and Prayers,
Eric, Lisa, Michael and Margaret Marrow
