Robert F. Sluder, a distinguished educator, decorated Korean War Veteran, star athlete, and maestro of wit, passed away serenely in Asheville, NC on September 4, 2025. Born on November 13, 1930, in Asheville, North Carolina, Robert lived a life of extraordinary service and vibrant spirit, leaving an enduring legacy of bravery, compassion, and intellectual joy.
In his youth, Robert shone as a star athlete in baseball and basketball at West Buncombe High School in Leicester, North Carolina, where his talent and tenacity on the field and court inspired teammates and spectators alike. This early display of excellence foreshadowed a life of remarkable achievement. As a proud patriot, Robert served with valor in the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for his courage and sacrifice. His heroism on the battlefield was matched by his dedication to education as Director of Special Education for Asheville City Schools. There, he championed inclusive learning, ensuring every student had the opportunity to flourish particularly the most vulnerable. His visionary leadership and heartfelt advocacy left an indelible mark on countless students, colleagues, and families.
Renowned for his love of language, Robert was a master of puns and wordplay, transforming ordinary moments into cherished memories with his clever quips. His sharp intellect and warm humor illuminated gatherings, delighting family and friends with laughter and insight. This gift for language was a hallmark of his character, reflecting a mind both playful and profound.
Robert is survived by his four devoted children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren: his daughter, Robin Barnes, wed to Jay Barnes, and their daughters, Heather Denning (wed to Trevor Denning, with children Treyson and Jaycie) and Lindsey Norris (wed to Tevin Norris, with son Ollie); and his sons, Tony Sluder (wed to Bonnie), Michael Sluder (with children Logan and Sarah), and Evan Sluder (wed to Kelly Sluder, with sons Taylor, Carson, and Matthew). He was predeceased by his beloved and cherished wife, Charlotte Sluder, whose love was the cornerstone of his life and the glue that cemented his family together.
Robert’s legacy endures in the lives he touched through his athletic prowess, heroic service, educational leadership, and infectious joy.
He will be dearly and lovingly remembered and missed by many.
The family will hold a small private service to celebrate his life.
